Dripping is onto something here, I was thinking it would be funny to collect photos of athletes caught pulling funny facial expressions. It would be fun to see more on here, The faces of London 2012.

I caught some of the weighlifting yesterday...these guys are insane. 3x bodyweight lifts... and North Korea seems to be dominating. The guy who won the 65kg division had a mediocre snatch and then destroyed everyone with a 168kg clean & jerk.

Appart from what you've read from that Daily mail article what do you actually know about this type of stripling training schemes? The picture of Kony is absolutely irrelevant to the nature of my comment and funnily enough the nature of your comment. |

lol the Chinese have been doing this shit for centuries, and not just in the Olympics. It's nothing new. They use the Olympics as a symbol of their resurgence to the top of the international system, hence why they take it so seriously. It's much more than sport to them.

Lol I didn't even read half of that especially since it's from the daily mail, you can see it all in the pics really, so you then saying how China take hard work to a higher level by child exploitation is inhuman. Like Cloaca said, they've been doing this for ages now and everyone knows how China is so I don't really have to read about their "cultural aspect" to understand how fucked up they are.
Oh and the Kony pic was only for the lolz to your edgy post ![]() |

![]() no, but very rightly so as Cloaca mentioned exploitation isn't a new thing when talking about China. the hard work and dedication ethos which is a strong belief in that part of the world. The cultural aspect that i'm talking about here is that in Asian countries their screening process for potentials in not just sport but all aspects of life starts at a much younger age than most western countries. More often than not it's the parents who instigate and push their kids into the extra work loads as well. Japan's not as stringent as China or even Korea but I remember as a kid wanting to play with friends after school but was unable to because they all had either extra study classes or sports classes after school which their parents signed them up too. This is what I'm getting at with cultural differences. In China's case they go that extra mile(if that saying even fits) and force parants into letting their children go. In the past it was "to give the child a better life" because more often than not the children came from impoverished backgrounds and being part of the programs meant they would at least eat 3 times a day and have a proper place to sleep. Now, obviously things are little different due to China's prosperity. The pictures by the way; the Gymnest kids look horrific but those swimming ones look great. That's what swimming clubs are, I still regret not joining one when I was younger ![]() Anyway, it's what's prompted this fresh look into China's tactics that's funny. The American swimming coaches are up in arms with accusations of doping and questioning morals of Chinese coaches because of that 16 year old destroying their swimming stars.. |

When I was at school there were probably around 100-150 kids from China/HK/Korea and a couple of Japanese too. And their work ethic's were astonishing... put all the English kids to shame.

Those pictures may be hard to look at but I'm with Goaters on this one...it probably isn't as bad as it may seem. It ultimately is about cultural differences and the difference of values between the East and West.
Individuals in Eastern countries are driven more by society and social status where as individuals in Western countries are more concerned with independence and how they stand out from society. Ask someone from China to describe themselves and then ask someone from America to describe themselves and you'll get two very different answers. |
