I'm pretty sure that war metal enthusiasts consider blasphemy to be the first war metal band. It's called war metal because it continues the satanic theme, but instead of performing invocations or just straight up preaching (figuratively speaking), the lyrics/ideas are about declaring spiritual warfare upon Xian.. or to advocate evil supremacy.

I do think it's a silly name, but blasphemy and archgoat are two of my favorite bands of all time.

i see, that's what i was wondering about. most of the bands that i see labeled as "war metal" have almost no lyrical themes about military warfare. a lot of the bands that i would consider "war metal" based on lyrical themes and not musical style (bolt thrower, arghoslent, cobalt etc...) are not "war metal". thanks for the clarification.

I don't think it's a real genre either.
Stuff like Turisas can get called war metal too. Anytime I've seen "war metal" used the band can usually be categorized under another existing genre.

"war metal" is just a term like "pirate metal" or whatever, but agree with bestial black/death metal. black/death can be just modern shit like Behemoth so the bestial part is part of the tag for me. one of, if not my favorite styles of metal. collector/nwn poster to the max.

Remember a few years ago when NWN! reissued Fallen Angel Of Doom & God Of War/Blood From The Altar on the diehard vinyl editions? The diehard editions are still going for a lot of $$$ on Ebay.
