Thoughts + merch

Thursday
Die Pigeon Die - Good but not much stage presence
Needful Things - Disappointing
Dying Fetus - Same as usual, good but if you've seen them once you've seen them a thousand times.
Absu - Sounded good from what I saw, not my cup of tea
Eyehategod - I like them way better on CD than live, not sure what it is about them...
Agalloch - PERFECT. I had been waiting forever for this. Amazing set list and performance
Autopsy - Good for the half I saw, sucked it took 45 minutes to get going.

Friday
Nashgul - Great at MDF, great in NY. See these guys if you can.
Ghoul - Awesome
Demigod - great sound, fun set
Macabre - redemption for 2008. They actually cared this time. Good song selections
Napalm Death - Good as usual
Godflesh - I can't get into this band for the life of me. I just don't get it.
Setherial - Good
Nasum - Really fun to see, bittersweet as fuck though.

Saturday
Infernal Stronghold - Good
Bloody Phoenix - Walked out after 1 song, didn't like the chick singers.
Looking For an Answer - Really good
Dragged Into Sunlight - Dark as fuck, LOVED it.
Black Witchery - Decent
Hellbastard - Fun live band
Horna - Good but I couldnt stand any more. Too hot.
Confessor - lol
Morbid angel - RULED. Really good setlist, pretty awesome performance. David needs to stop talking so much though and Trey walked out during the last 2-3 songs..wtf happened?
Haemorrhage - My favorite set of the weekend (no shit rite?)

Sunday
Backslider - Good
Cokebust - great
Agents of Abhorrence - really good
Church of Misery - Do people like this band to be ironic? I don't get them.
Morgoth - fun
Ulcerate - Sounded okay but not a huge fan
Suffocation - best IVe ever seen them sound, perfect setlist.
Electric Wizard - I give the rain during EW five stars. It also was a good way to send me off to sleep.

Really a great fest again. I watched less bands than normal but I spent way more time hanging out with people so I still had a fucking blast. Food was much improved. snowcones spiked with vodka FTW.

merch:
MDF poster + shirt
Cenotaph-Repuked Purulency
Cripple Bastards-Frammenti di Vita
Darkthrone-Total Death
Darkthrone-Goatlord
Dishammer-Vintage Addiction
Dismember-Like an Everflowing Stream willowtip reissue
Haemorrhage-Loathesongs
Haemorrhage/Grusome Stuff Relish split
Haemorrhage/Disgorge(mex) split
Lymphatic Phlegm-Show Off Cadavers...
Paralysis-Patrons of the Dark (For fucking $3! Gutter had some ridiculously old shit for sale for cheap)
Regurgitate-Carnivorous Erection
Veneficum-Dysphoria

Spent a bit more than I planned but most of them were cheap so whatever.

Saturday

Bloody Phoenix: They were ok I guess, the chick singers felt like cardboard cutouts of the "hxc metuhl chixxx" type
Looking for an Answer: Good
Dragged into Sunlight: Really good, one of the best performances
Hellbastard: They were ok
Morbid Saint: Pretty good
The Devil's Blood: Bit of a surprise but they were actually pretty good. Fun to watch.
Anvil: Hilarious, really fun set.
Confessor: They were cool, reminded me of Judas Priest.
Horna: Good, didn't watch much of their set though
Morbid Angel: Other than the fact that their set was shorter than it was supposed to be and Trey's guitar cutting out during God of Emptiness (which is why he left the stage), they put on a kickass show. I was pretty sapped by the end of their set (though front row spot ftw). Chapel of Ghouls and Lord of all Fevers and Plagues were the highlights for me.
Haemorrhage: Fun set, but I ended up getting shuffled by the crowd to the other side of the room, lol
Winter: I was gonna skip them only because I was so burnt out after Morbid Angel and Haemorrhage, but I ended up staying for their set and they were slower than on record, which was a good thing. Glad I caught them.

Sunday

Coke Bust: Fun set, met the drummer while talking to Chris from Dcheavymetal.com and he was a nice dude. Didn't know he played in Magrudergrind too, pretty cool!
Agents of Abhorrence: Ridiculously good, guitarist is insane.
Disma: One of the fest's highlights, very dark, doomy death metal and they put on a really great performance.
Demonical: Listened to them from the parking lot after I smoked a couple of blunts before Ulcerate (thanks Schwenger/Robinator!). They were cool.
Ulcerate: Destroyed, great way to pop my Ulcy concert cherry
Suffocation: 1000x better than the last time I saw them, the pit was one of the most violent ones of the fest. The chicken guy was there too and shit was flying EVERYWHERE. Everybody was awesome and Dave Culross especially kicked ass.

Picked up:

Ulcerate shirt
Wormed shirt
Autopsy shirt
Bloodbath shirt
MDF '10 shirt (black, shaded, with the roster on the back)
Defeated Sanity shirt
and Daniel Ekeroth's book Swedish Sensationfilms for my girlfriend, because she's into that stuff.

Overall this weekend was great! Met a shit ton of cool people and some old friends, including Schwenger and his gf, Robinator, Entwined/Suspicious Chunks, SwedeMetal, DrippingInsanity, royalhernia (and his buddy Axel), and of course the super fabulous Hunter-Drugs-Hendrix. Also met the guitarists from Ulcerate at Barkat and Terrance Hobbs coming out of the HiE, very nice guys.

Thursday
Extermination Angel - Reminded me of nuns-Laughter, boring
Die Pigeon Die - absolute garbage
Needful Things - Sound way better on cd.
Dying Fetus - Better than the bands before but I've seen them too many times, alright overall.
Absu - boring live
Agalloch - Amazing, glad they played halls of enchanted ebony.
Autopsy - Pretty good, don't like their new stuff though.

Friday

Ghoul - Hilarious
Demigod - Best band along with morbid saint I haven't seen before, so HEAVY.
Negura Bunget - Watched a bit. I've heard their stuff and it sounds similar live but in both cases, kindof boring
Artillery - amazing, iron-maiden worship thrash
Napalm Death - never was a fan, didn't change this time either.
Setherial - had a good sound, but the only really good song was For Dem Brod or whatever.
Nasum - Awesome just like when I saw them a week before in cleveland.

Saturday

Looking For an Answer - good but generic
Dragged Into Sunlight - loved just one song, volcanic rebirth, other than that their guitar tone and overall sound sucks.
Black Witchery - too simplistic but i like the energy they have.
morbid saint - Amazing, relentless thrash. Along with demigod, the best band I've seen for the first time.
Archgoat - awesome, heaviest black metal band ever. Liked how the demigod guitarist is also their drummer.
Horna - prefer sargiest.
Brujeria - good guitar tone, can't stand the spanish vocals though.
Morbid angel - Along with suffo, best band of the weekend. Loud but great sound. Amazing pit energy for their classics.
tsjuder - boring, blasturbation bm.
Haemorrhage - even though I had some fun in their mosh bit they overrall bored me, their overhyped by many. Sounded like generic goregrind to me.

Sunday
Backslider - Garbage
Disma - crushing like before
Demonical - Biggest disappointment, one guitar really made some parts sound like shit and their vocalist sounds so much better on cd.
Ulcerate - Drummer is great, their riffs bore me though, just like modern gorguts, overhyped.
Agents of Abhorrence - Saw a little bit, average at best.
Morgoth - boring oldschool dm.
Suffocation - Easily the heaviest and most brutal band there. Frank was hilarious as always and they crushed as always.
Electric Wizard - I don't understand this band because I really don't get stoned and I haven't been all weekend. I guess the nightsky and city atmosphere added to their atmosphere even though their music is boring as piss.
Sargeist - guitar tone was really grainy..they don't sound as clear as on cd. Was very dissappointed. One of the bands I was looking forward to the most. I do like how the entire band besides the drummer stared straight almost the entire time, except with the guitarist looking at his guitar on occasion.

I wish unanimated didn't drop off since I was looking forward to seeing them the most. Good year overall, but I won't go if next year's lineup does not have any of the following bands: vinterland, dawn(swe), sacramentum reunion, convulse, demilich, Emperor, immortal. I just don't want to go to a fest if I seen all the bands already in my city already.

Merch: illogicist new cd, wormed both cds, infernal revulsion cd, embalmer 13 faces of death cd, mdf X zombie shirt, emperor ITNE shirt, Dissection Somberlain shirt, burzum vargisil pack, choosing death book

Thursday:
Die Pigeon Die: Liked em. A good start to the fest for me.
Needful Things: Watched them but they weren't too memorable.
Dying Fetus: Fun as usual.
Absu: Watched a little but don't remember much.
Agalloch: Sounded really good.
Autopsy: Was way too tired by the time they got started so I only watched about half but they were awesome.

Friday:
Nashgul: Awesome. One of my favorite bands of the fest.
Ghoul: Great as usual. Nicest dudes too.
Demigod: Watched from the shade and they sounded good.
Macabre: Seemed like they were having way more fun this time. Liked the Albert Fish and Zodiac costumes.
Napalm Death: Sounded great.
Setherial: Can't remember much about their set now but I think I liked them...
Nasum: Awesome. I wish I could have seen them with Mieszko.

Saturday:
Infernal Stronghold: Decent. It was nice to see a few Philly bands on the fest this year.
Bloody Phoenix: Only watched one song cuz I hated the girl singers. I had seen them before with a guy singer and they were much better.
Looking For an Answer: Really liked them. Definitely going to check out more of their stuff.
Dragged Into Sunlight: Too gimmicky for my taste but they sounded good.
Hellbastard: Listened to a little from afar and they sounded fun. Didn't stick around long though.
Black Witchery: Watched a little. They were ok but nothing real special.
Archgoat: Watched a little but I can't remember much. I may have been drunk...
Horna: Best black metal band of the fest. Really glad I chugged some Red Bull and woke up for them.
Morbid Angel: Pretty good set list (minimal new crap) but it was too bad they had guitar issues.
Tsjuder: Wanted to watch them but was too tired so I only watched a little. They sounded decent though.
Haemorrhage: Best band of the fest.

Sunday:
Backslider: Sounded good and I had been meaning to see them for a while.
Coke Bust: Really good. I wish their set was longer.
Agents of Abhorrence: Fun to watch.
Disma: Liked them but they were a little slow for me to want to watch the whole thing. Plus it was hot so I decided to go drink.
Morgoth: Wasn't sure if I was going to watch them but I'm glad I did. They sounded really good.
Ulcerate: Watched a song and they sounded alright. Not entirely my thing.
Suffocation: Probably my 2nd favorite set of the weekend. So much fun.
Sargeist: Watched a few songs but they didn't do much for me live. I like them on album though.

Overall this year probably had the least number of bands I wanted to watch (after TDEBN and Dodheimsgard dropped off) but I still had a great time. Liked the new food options and expanded merch area. It was awesome meeting new people and seeing old friends again. If the people in lobster hats or they guy who showed up in his pajamas on Sunday are reading this, you made me smile.

Merch:
MDF shirt/poster
Haemorrhage: Feasting on Purulence shirt
Alienation Mental: s/t
Dirk Diggler: s/t
Depression/Haemorrhage split
Mincing Fury and Guttural Clamour of Queer Decay: Devolution
Vomitous Rectum: A Series of Brutal Moments
Goratory: Orgasm Induced Diarrhea
"The Horror Hive" Razorback Records Compilation
Clotted Symmetric Sexual Organ: Collection
Relapse Japanese Assault
Cannibe vs Gutalax split

Every band I saw impressed except Castevet. I'm still a fan but way too much fiddling with cables/broken strings/etc. Nasum was so much fun it made saturday and sunday just gravy. Best Napalm Death set I've seen and Lilker on bass for Scum was a very nice treat. The grind on saturday truly impressed along with DiS and their mesmerizing set. Reminded me of watching Portal like a mouth breather. The shift to doom on sunday was perfect for me. YOB playing 3 songs in 45 minutes including every glorious note of The Mental Tyrant... jizz. Sucked that security refused to close the side door though. Speaking of, security were kinda dicks during Church of Misery. I've never seen them go through the crowd looking for pot smokers like that before. Got a cashed bowl confiscated. Annoying more than anything. As usual an epic time was had. Ryan and Evan plan better and better every year.

Nasum - MDF shirt
Disma - MDF shirt
Church of Misery - MDF shirt and patch(they didn't have any change)
DiS - Tour shirt and Goat shirt
YOB - dunno what it's called shirt
Bloody Phoenix - dude getting inverted/crucified shirt(grey)
Haemorrhage - Kill Sessions(yellow)
Pestilence - Malleus Maleficarum (1st time I've bought from the over priced guy in the corner... couldn't resist)

This was my 4th year in a row attending the fest and it was good as always but i didnt spend a lot of time this year looking at unknown or least familiar bands to me.

Thursday:
Dying Fetus: Awesome, first time catching them live so it was an new experience for me.
Absu: 3rd time seeing them, they never disappoint.
Agalloch: Fabulous
Autopsy: Solid but like another said i wasnt too crazy about the last record.

Friday:
Negura Bunget: Awesome band and finally got to see them live.
Artillery: Fun band and exceptional live.
Napalm Death: Wife and i are big and longtime fans. Got Barney to sign a old Fear, Emptiness, Despair poster for us as well as a picture with my wife.

Saturday:
Archgoat: Awesome live.
Horna: Love them on record, live was meh.
Anvil: After watching their dvd i had to make it a point to see them live. Was fun.
Morbid Angel: Thank goodness they played mostly old stuff. Was funny watching the pit die down when they played the new crap.

Sunday:
Morgoth: Between these guys and Suffo were the best bands of the weekend for me.
Ulcerate: Good on cd, live? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Suffocation: Fantastic, the bassist was outstanding.

Merch:

Didnt really go all out this year like normally. Picked up a Dying Fetus shirt, Dissection patch, and a couple of posters of the fest to have framed like my others.

Friday:

Demigod - Fucking awesome!! Was pissed I missed them when I didn't go to Rites of Darkness, so I was very happy they played MDF.

Macabre - This was the first time I saw them sober, so I will actually remember them this time!! They were my favorite band of Friday!! So much fun!!

Artillery - I was so hot and sore (was standing outside the gate since 9:30am when I arrived). But they sounded fucking great!!

Napalm Death - I am NOT a Napalm Death fan, but they kicked my fucking ass!!!! So much energy and so brutal!!!! I may become a fan now!!!

Godflesh - Interesting.

Setherial - Awesome.

Saturday:

Hellbastard - Awesome!

Black Witchery - Fucking amazing! So evil!!

October 31 - Fun!!

The Devil's Blood - Gets boring REAL quick!! I do enjoy the extended version of "Christ or Cocaine" though.

Archgoat - Watched a few songs...too hot inside!! Which sucks because they were one of the main bands I wanted to see.

Anvil - Goofy.

Morbid Saint - Amazing!

Brujeria - FUCKING BRUTAL!!!!!!!

Morbid Angel - TERRIBLE! The drums were too triggered. Good song selection, but not the same without Pete!! Plus, I'm not the world's biggest David Vincent fan...although he was very friendly when I had him sign my CDs.

Tsjuder - Evil! Hail Satan! -I-

Sunday:

Disma - HOLY FUCK!!!! Craig Pillard still has it!!!!!!

Church of Misery - Not bad.

Morgoth - Meh

Pentagram Chile - Fucking awesome!! Was also cool to see all the Satanic Hispanics all in one spot at one time!!!

Nausea - Brutal!!!

Saint Vitus - BEST BAND OF WEEKEND!!! I was headbanging, air guitaring, and pumping my fist in the air like a teenager again!!! They were fucking great!!! Even the pouring rain wouldn't stop them!!!! I thought Wino was going to knock out the sound guy though!!

Electric Wizard - Not bad, but I honestly don't see all the hype.

Sargeist - AMAZING!!!!!! So fucking evil!!!

Mortuary Drape - Great!!!!!!

Merch Bought:

CDs:
Sargeist - Satanic Black Devotion
Watain - Casus Luciferi
Saint Vitus - Die Healing
Demoncy - Faustian Dawn / Within the Sylvan Realms of Frost (compilation)
Abigail - The Lord of Satan (compilation)
Krisiun - Southern Storm
Deceased - Luck of the Corpse
Judas Iscariot - Heaven in Flames

Vinyl:
Horna - Adventus Satanae (7")

Shirts:
Black Witchery
Desaster

Patches:
Dissection
Conqueror

Was also great to see many of my friends from the scene from over the years. Honorable mentions: Dana Duffey, Chris Dora, Duane Morris, Ville Pystynen, Mary Bielich, John and Jill McEntee, King Fowley.

Every band I watched whether I knew them or not was awesome... except Black Witchery and Church of Misery. Seeing Electric Wizard and Saint Vitus live after listening to those bands for so long made my year.

Does anyone know who the Mexican guys were selling all the shirts and some cds? I didn't make my way over to them in time and before I knew it they had sold out of so much. Just curious if they do mail order...

If you're referring to the booth up against the back of the diner (closest to the outdoor stage), then they're ChopoBrujos.

Sunday. I must agree that Electric Wizard was boring as piss. Somewhat enjoyed their set anyway.. Saint Vitus was spot on. Best guitar solos of any band I remember seeing. Mortuary Drape was so much fucking fun. I never wanted them to stop playing.
Saturday. Hellbastard ruled. Felt like puking while frying in the sun though.. Later on Tsjuder played that Sacrifice cover and I went nuts. I spent all of Winter walking around off my ass trying to find a piece, ah well. I missed so many bands on this day. It's a fucking shame.
Friday. Napalm Death!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Demigod!!!!!!! Today is the Day!!!!! Didn't want any of those sets to ever end evar.
Thursday. Meh. The sound was off that day. (or was it sobriety's fault?) I couldn't really get into anything. It was a disappointing start- Autopsy and EHG were priorities for me, too.

I bought a lot of hot dogs and someone gave me a Candlemass patch and I've got two hickeys aka best fucking weekend of life!!!!!!

To the dude who said Electric Wizard were boring, I'm glad someone said it, lol.. and truth be told, I am a HUGE EW fan to boot. However on this particular night I was very bummed about them not playing any classics except the one track off of Come My Fanatics. They didn't play anything of Dopethrone either which was a shame. And honestly, as much as I hate to say this, I kind of feel that the older material is better than the newer stuff they've been branching off into.

Anyway, in my humble opinion St. Vitus totally blew them and every other band that night away!

Thursday
Die Pigeon Die - awesome, good sound, wish the party brigade actually happened though, very fun.
Needful Things - little disappointing, they were much better in NY
Rorschach - wasn't digging it like I though I would, left early
Agalloch - watched a few songs, didn't play any of ashes and thats the only album I like so sat down
Autopsy - was up at the front but took wayy too long to setup and was tired so moved to the back, sounded good but only caught a few songs since I've seen them before.

Friday
Castevet - cool, love this band but Andrew breaking a string and the cable problems didn't help
Nashgul - fun, great band, loved it
Ghoul - only caught a little bit due to waiting on line but always great
Nasum - awesome, played a lot of great songs, great energy and was fun
Demigod - amazing, wasn't so great in the hot sun but once I got close enough to be in the shade it was awesome
Macabre - only watched a little, sounded fun
Napalm Death - so fucking loud, was right in the front, intense, good song selection

Saturday
Bloody Phoenix - cool but like everyone said, wasn't feeling the singers, would be better at a smaller show
Looking for an Answer - amazing, one of the best performances, so much fun, was right in the front
Noothgrush - HOLY SHIT, so good, top 3 of the weekend, so fucking heavy, great selection of songs and dino's vocals were perfect
Haemorrhage - FUCK YES, band needs to play every year.
Deviated Instinct - wanted to watch but wasn't really feeling it
Morbid Angel - watched a little bit, seen them already, so left early, listened from my room too, lol'd when I heard everyone kinda stood still for the new songs and trey walking off stage like a baby and taking forever to setup

Sunday
Backslider - cool, you could tell Logan was a little nervous but they were fun
Coke Bust - amazing, crowd was loving it, more bands like this needed
Agents of Abhorrence - fucking awesome, such a tight guitarist and cool noisy loops between songs like the album, saw in NY and was even better
Ulcerate - Rwake kinda played a little but (yeah those extended chords and 5 minutes of unwinding were really necessary) but they were awesome. Sound wasn't as good as NY and didn't play as long but were phenominal. Thanks so much for booking them.
Suffocation - best I've seen them in years, played so many older songs, fucking awesome.

It was at that vendor in the inside merch room that was directly to the left of the bar if you were staring at it. It was on the right of the stairs and they were the ones with that sign that said they accept credit cards. It was really out of place from the other stuff they had in the box. They had one left after I bought it on sunday too...

Goddammit. I missed them. Next to the brutal DM distro right? I didn't think to check there. Someone told me someone had it there but I didn't think it was them.

Yeah it was Sunday night and all the outdoor vendors were packing up so decided to really check the inside vendors I usually overlook and found a few cool ones. Mel got Wormrot and Sete Star Sept lps from a black metal vendor too, lol.

Speaking of vendors and merch, did anyone else here do business with the European concert t-shirt vendor who was located in the corner of the inside room of the Sonar and sorta find the dude running that booth to be a bit of a dick? Bad enough that he was charging 25 bucks for a shirt and to be a rude prick on top of that makes me wonder how this guy returns year after year...

^I think I know who your talking about, I was at that both last year and he just talked to his friend without acknowledging that a customer was in front looking to buy something. He also got into a somewhat, mild argument with another dude about buying a burzum shirt and how he complained that it was overpriced.

That's probably him indeed. When I approached his booth, there was a mob of people all waiting to receive help from this douchebag and me someone else ended up leaving, deciding not to give him any business on account of the fact that all he did was sit there and didn't bother to ask anyone if they needed help nor did he look like he wanted to be there. I think that dude is either Ukrainian or Polish or something..

And honestly, as much as I hate to say this, I kind of feel that the older material is better than the newer stuff they've been branching off into.

Anyway, in my humble opinion St. Vitus totally blew them and every other band that night away!
and they played the title track, Dopethrone....second song i believe

Probably has to do with the selection of shirts he has. But i agree, he generally isnt all that friendly.

Great first impressions:
Negura Bunget, Dragged Into Sunlight, The Devils Blood: Never really heard to much of these bands, or listened to them, but will now consider buying their CD's.
Enhanced my liking:
Mortuary Drape, Bethlehem
Great Performances:
Morbid Angel: Sorry to see Trey Azagthoth leave 2 songs early
Suffocation
Hoping to make a comeback:
Tsjuder: I missed most of their set due to watching Morbid Angel. Came in while they were playing Slakt. Hopefully they come back here to the U.S. Baltimore/D.C., or even Philadelphia area.
I still liked watching performances by:
Godflesh, Sargeist, Setherial; Archgoat, Black Witchery, Macabre
I still like the eerie/cold stare from some of the members of (I believe it was...) Sargeist
I did catch some others, but was taking a break most of the time

Merchandise:
Maryland Deathfest 2012: T-shirt, Poster
Archgoat: T-shirt
Pest: Rest In Morbid Darkness CD
Exhumed: Anatomy Is Destiny
Financially I wasn't looking too much, but it just seemed like the vendors really didn't have all that I wanted and I was looking more for the more rarer stuff.

From ChopoBrujos(the mexicans outside behind the diner). I think they had 2 shirts on display. Was hoping for a tour shirt, but I am happy with what I got. Basic black t-shirt with a picture that looks like the Whore of Bethlehem cover, but on a cross with a severed head.
