What do y'all think of Busta Rhymes? I don't seem him get much love from these types of threads, which isn't too surprising considering his recent work is pretty lackluster mainstream party rap, but his first two albums should appeal to fans of Wu-Tang Clan, especially for those that like Ol' Dirty Bastard. The beats are very raw and grimy, and Busta sounds very rugged and unhinged.
Leaders of the New School is also criminally overlooked. Most people have just heard them on ATCQ's "Scenario" or the stuff from Future Without a Past, which is a pretty unserious album, but they really stepped up their game on T.I.M.E. and I have no idea why hardly anyone even reviews this album. It's definitely a forgotten gem of 1993. It's like a mid-way point between Enter the Wu-Tang (multiple personalities, abstract lyrics, gritty beats, but not as dark or thuggish), Enta da Stage (dark, but smooth jazzy beats and a strong dancehall reggae influence, but once again not as dark or thuggish), and Midnight Marauders (deep funky jazzy beats, but a little darker, stranger, and with more abstract lyrics). ^^ Good call on the early Busta Rhymes shit Cernunnos, completely forgot about them... the track "Woo Haa! Got You All In Check" is bad-ass... I remember first hearing it on The Trilogy skate video way back in the day (fucking amazing skate vid, btw, Ronnie Creager ftmfw):
Forgot this in my first list; surprised nobody has mentioned it yet: ![]() |

Aside from the singles and a few other songs, this album rather disappoints me. The beats aren't as interesting IMO.... they're all just kind of ...there. There's too much emphasis on just making party songs, instead of offering a variety of moods like on the previous two albums. Most problematic is that Busta's lyrics start to get flat out boring on this album. Not that he was a lyrical wordsmith earlier, but he at least said enough strange and funny stuff in weird voices over smooth or rugged beats to keep you entertained. Here, he started his downward trend of recycling the same old "bust yo lip" and "chickenhead/hoe" themes with no imagination. It's still all right though, and the first two songs you posted are probably the best.
The Coming and When Disaster Strikes are still his best IMO. I also love the Neptunes-produced stuff on Genesis, as well as the J-Dilla track, but that album has the same problem described above. I barely remember anything from Anarchy, so I can't even comment on the tone. |

Sure a lot of Wayne's lines are extremley cringeworthy, but there are a few decent ones in his songs too and I actually like him for his unique delivery, which I understand can annoy others. Long story short, like I said it doesn't always have to be dictionary rap. I find him to be super fun to listen 's all. Quote:

"Hustlin" is definitely a bit overrated, but it kinda grew on me, because of Katt Williams stand up routine haha Great song. I love bumping that album during the summer for some reason. Yeah, exactly. Well, if someone would ask me what I would think are the best hip hop albums ever, his records wouldn't be in there either, but I gotta be honest, I listened to them almost as much as to Illmatic, 36 Chambers and Madvillainy. Sorry for this rant but, I really don't understand why Li'l Wanye gets so much respect. He is not a rapper, he is a Pop Entertainer with really lame Fruity Loop beats, over produced vocals and shallow irrelevent "lyrics" talking about how rich he is... And he's only rich because people buy his shit in the first place!
In the "rap game" he is about as hard as Justin Beiber, meaning his fanbase should be nothing but 10-12 year old girls... There is much better hip hop out there, even in the same vein! Li'l Wayne should be ignored even if/when the music is enjoyable, simply based on the principle that he doesn't deserve the sucess and respect he has. So why give it to him? To put it in perspective, I don't think anyone in the metal scene would accept the idea of Disturbed touring with Gorguts, right? Well, Li'l Wayne is the Disturbed of the hip hop community. In fact, I would not even goes as far as calling what he does hip hop. Again, it's watered down pop music made for Top 30 countdowns. Li'l Wayne is a bitch! Yup, that's my rant for today. EDIT: I have to admit his stupid voice fit perfect for that Martians vs Goblin chorus though Last edited by Dunlop; 05-03-2012 at 09:56 AM.. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() @ Dunlop : I hate Lil Wayne too. If we're gonna talk about mainstream rap, I prefer listening to 80's/early 90's stuff. Funnier and catchy as fuck. I don't feel like ranting about him though. What I hate even more are those wiggerish, pseudo-rapper kiddies from the Quebec hip-hop scene. My hatred towards them knows no bounds. Total Garbage. I could post more if I wanted. People who listen or support this shit should be shot on sight. Actually 99.5% of all Quebec-made hip-hop fucking sucks. A couple of friends of mine tried to get me into French rap too but I find French rap utterly godawful. It all sounds the same to me. They always have those weak-ass, bland beats which all sounds the same. 0 groove, flow, catchiness, sexiness or memorability whatsoever. I find the french accent also incredibly annoying in that context too. Last edited by Chromaticity; 05-03-2012 at 01:47 PM.. |
