Like that new band Ad Nauseam from Italy, THAT just makes me want to listen to Ulcerate, because that's what it sounds like to me, trying to emulate Ulcerate in every facet of their music. |

nah, i'm not saying it's cookie cutter-esqe at all. they definitely have their own sound. i think i'm more agreeing with goaters in that, it somehow lacks the aggressiveness that other bands like DsO (and only DsO) just nail.
i do really enjoy the creepier sounding passages. the spoken vocal effects are awesome. i need to listen again on headphones before i talk too much. i think i only went through it 3 times on repeat. |

i'm gonna throw out a little example...
listen to this song between 3:10-4:10 or so they are not holding back. somehow i got the feeling that the entire dodecahedron album was just building and brewing but i never got that AAAARHHGHGGGGGHHHHHHH fucking release of an evil putrid load all over my face. no homo. |

Cheers for the link. Hmm, def a HUGE Ulcy vibe in there (and a lot of Gorguts). I think naming themselves after an Ulcerate track probably wouldn't help to distance them from the similarities.

There's enough creative breathing room within the genre--not every band is on the verge of self parody like Carpathian Forest or Sarcofago. But there are margins, and all of these converge riff bands are really just dark and imposing in an incredibly abstract sense.

Not saying they own the term, but there is a big Ulcerate influence there. You'd think they would want to make it a bit less apparent. It would be like forming a Suffoclone band and calling it Funeral Inception or something. Anyway, just my two cents.

I'll probably get flamed for this.. but whatever, lol..
I don't see how black metal could logically stay 'relevant' without some form of maturity, period. I said in another thread somewhere that a lot of these straight up, misanthropic, satanic black metal bands don't have much of a shelf life anymore (and I still firmly believe this, lol) because quite honestly, there's only so far you can go with the whole corpse paint, fake blood, pigs heads/guts, and paying homage to satanic rituals, etc., etc. because over time it just loses its shock value. Just take a look at Black Witchery for example.. nuff fucking said! I kind of look at all that the same way that retro thrash bands try desperately to bring the year '84 back. That all said, I applaud bands like Altar of Plagues, Leviathan, and even Lifelover for merely existing. |

Fuck staying relevant. There will always be people that want straight up black metal, corpse paint, spikes et al and then there will be people who want the musical styling of black metal with a more progressive twinge. One is the original, one is a spin off. Black metal has stayed far more relevant than thrash in any case.
Also Black Witchery are deadly. |

That seems a bit presumptuous to me. I don't think Johnny wants black metal bands to clone Panzer Division Marduk over and over again. Though the word "rebellious" is lost to perpetual adolescents in my book, I expect that when he refers to the "mystery" and "destructiveness" of black metal he means pretty well developed bands. Also, clearly bands can be developed but still aesthetically traditional, like Inquisition.
I played the dodecahedron album and liked it, but IIRC only the first two songs maintain a pace beyond mid, which makes me less interested. Like I said somewhere else, if you're going to play mid-paced metal your riffs have to be better on average to keep the experience interesting. That's after one listen while browsing - I'm open to the album being great. Last edited by LesserAnimal; 03-01-2012 at 11:54 AM.. |

Listened to half of it last night. Fairly deadly stuff and I'm not usually a fan of their recorded output, mind you it's been about five years since I checked anything out.
