At first I didn't think Koloss felt "dark" at all, but after many many listens the darkness is indeed starting to seep in, and I'd have to agree with you.

Obzen felt quite austere, though, which I liked.

Koloss is the first album with sub-par/throwaway moments for me. The openings of Demon's.. and Hurt.. are so bland and generic, it's galling.

Yeah, I think The Hurt rules. Honestly I think it's the most original thing I've heard done with thrash in ages. It's easily the most unique song on the album, both musically and structurally.

The end of Hurt is cool with the whole reverse build up thing and definitely original and seems fresh. However, the first 2 minutes are so fucking mediocre and a big step backwards for the band. The riffing isn't even that good or original. If I wanna hear meshuggah play thrash, I'll listen to Contradictions Collapse.

Well, I liked The Hurt. I thought the snare sound was really good for it, sounded kinda like a tin can. The "If I wanted to hear thrash" sentiment was how I felt when I first heard Combustion but I don't feel that way about The Hurt.

Still listening to this every day. While its not my favorite its definitely another fantastic Meshuggah album and will get tons of listens from me. The production is perfect even though the snare on The Hurt does get a bit annoying. The guitars sound exactly how they should for the Shugg, beefy as fuck.

Dude, you saw them a few weeks back; have they changed around their live set-list much? Or are they still pretty much sticking to what is on the "Alive" DVD?

THTFYF is slowly becoming my new favorite...I can see what's initially unappealing about it, but goddamn, that song has gotta have the best use of an eight (seven maybe?) string guitar--opening up to the lower register in the midst of rage=jizz everywhere. The development and arrangement of riffs in the song really opens you up to the dynamics of thoughtful song structure and form, which is what Koloss is all about imo.

That being said, I can't get into the groove of Demiurge. Sounds like it could be an epic live song though.
