Like Marinao said, opinion is still pending, but early feelings.....
Marrow is THE shit. One of the best Meshuggah songs in ages. I Am Colossus is also a standout. Last Vigil is pretty awesome but not In Death - Is Death level of awesome. On the other hand, The Hurt That Finds You is not doing much for me at the moment. The snare overpowers the guitars to an extent (unlike tracks like Combustion or I which also have a lot of snare) which is a bit frustrating. However, with this band I would never write any track off in the space of a day or two. As a whole though, the album delivers hard yet again. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to putting the end of Marrow on repeat.... |

Is that a blastbeat I hear at 2:05 in The Hurt That Finds You First? neat!
After initially being disappointed that this album isn't exactly like obZen, it's slowly starting to grow on me. It doesn't fuck on the first date. It asks for some effort before spreading it's juicy clam! |

Finally managed to listen to it now. Those tempo ramps in Swarm are pretty awesome, Marrow, The Hurt and Demon's Name also stuck with me the most. Cool album but stil ain't proper hooked yet, I think it's one of those releases that I might have to read the lyrics along with the music to get the feel of it. DEI & Nothing still remain as my favs though!

It's the Shug, so it's awesome, but I don't think I'm going to end up liking it as much as ObZen. I loved every track on that record; there are a few on this ("The Hurt...", "Break Those Bones...", "Swarm") that are cool but don't really excite me. They could grow on me tho, Shuggah songs tend to do that.
Anyone want to guess who wrote what? I always like doing that with new Shuggah albums. "The Demon's..." is definitely Fredrik and I would bet that "I am Colossus" and "Demiurge" are Marten's, the other are a little tougher though. My guesses. I am colssus:Marten demon's name: Fredrik do not look down:Marten Behind the sun:Marten the hurt: fredrik marrow:fredrik break those bones:marten swarm:fredrik demiruge:marten last vigil:marten |

I feel that the album is fantastic overall. The increased diversity in the drumming and riffwork is fresh for them. Some of the grooves are incredibly punishing, and I like mindfucks like the annoying build-down at the end of The Hurt...
The Last Vigil, whilst cool, is a bit too long for my liking. I come to Meshuggah to feel like I'm oscillating in 10,000 tonne gyroscope in space, not to feel like I'm doing heroin. Oh and I take back what I said about the Marrow riff haha. Totally works in the context of the song. But don't get me wrong. Any other band would have made that riff sound fucking lame, trust me. Also, I would come to the conclusion that this is not their best work so far, simply because it collectively carries nowhere near as much composure as an album as Catch33 or Obzen. The songs are much more varied in comparison, which is good, but albums like Catch33 are masterpieces and true auditory journeys. This album is excellent, but is just a collection of songs with little to lay claim to an 'album story'. IMO. Last edited by discombobulation; 03-22-2012 at 10:36 AM.. |

I feel Obzen has a bit more flow than Chaosphere though, but I see where you're coming from. All in all, this feels like one of their least coherent albums to date. Even though the individual songs are bitching, it takes something away from it for me when it doesn't flow that sublimely as a whole. |

I think Kolossless isn't up to par with their best work. Break those bones is still my favorite song. :(

can't relate to any of these opinions.
anyone else get tripped up by the second riff in the opening track? sounds like it's getting faster, but it isn't. love that. |

Just got the album in the mail. Definitely a lot more co-writing on this album.
I am colossus: marten, fredrik Demon:fredrik Do not look down: tomas, marten, fredrik Behind the sun: jens (wtf? lol didn't see that coming.) Hurt: marten marrow:tomas, marten, fredrik break:marten swarm:tomas, marten, fredrik demiurge:marten last vigil:marten The lyrics are cool as always, although I've always felt Hakke's best writing was on Chaosphere. Favorite lyrics ever, both in writing and how Jens delivered them on the record. Also I'm agreement with most that thought this won't end up being my favorite from them, I can guarantee it'll still be my metal AOTY. Last edited by Hyperviolence; 03-22-2012 at 12:46 PM.. |

Listening to this for the first time, I jumped straight to Marrow to see what the fuss was all about.
...It feels like I'm getting lovingly raped by a giant robotic bear. |
