Brutal Flashback
With the Cryptopsy cartel realigned & set for a promising future, enjoy this gem from the Youtube vaults. The recording and sound is *outstanding* ditto for the performance... great song, great album. As I've said many times before, I think Mike did a decent job on the album version, but live Martin Fucking KILLS IT. \m/
PS. Kindly note that the band were on fire, with >>Alex<< in it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnMidnvLIjI |

My only complaint with martin was his phrasing, off quite a bit in some sectons, but an awesome and brutal combination of both worm and disalvo.

I can see what you mean... I guess I was cool with it, as I felt he kept it interesting. Y'know not doing everything EXACTLY like it was on the album ie. sterile. And yea, his choking rasp on "Open Face" wasn't LW's unholy scream... but I'd like to hear all the people who bitched back in the day try it themselves.
Totally agree on how you sum up his vocal approach; abit more of a "trad death metal" vocalist. I remember in an old interview how he cited some favourite vocal influences from favourite albums: EARLY David Vincent, "Retribution" by Malevolent Creation and Nicke Andersson's awesome performance on "Clandestine." To me, that equates to a satisying, powerful range, a touch of dirt, but for all of us initiated in extreme metal - a degree of *Clarity* Not allout low-end sludge like TOTM Chris Barnes, Sylvain Houde and Matti Way. [Nothing wrong with those vox of course... as long as they suit the metal being played] If you ain't done so, check out Spasme's "Deep Inside." Aggro, Death-like prog metal: Martin owns the fucking place on that, IMO. |
