I just bought 21st amendment Back in Black on a whim, the first "black IPA" I've tried. I get the sense that there is a lot of variation between beers in this category though. I thought the beer was interesting but I can't say I loved it. I guess I found the taste to be confusing in a way.

As for the tasting thing, I think it's an issue of commitment. For a while, I will be tasting beers really intently and trying to learn about it. Then I will feel like it's stupid to think so hard about it, and spend a few months just drinking beer and enjoying it, but not putting any particular thought into identifying flavors.

Same way with music really. I alternate between phases of being analytical and just listening.

As for me identifying particular flavors and tastes in beer, it really just comes from experience(from both food and beer) and being able to "put your finger on" certain tastes that you can pick out. A lot of it is memory, so just expand your palate when it comes to food and you will have more reference points.

^Yeah this stuff goes down very easy. We drank that shit all the time in Italy. There aren't many alternatives though, most Italian beers taste just like crap.

Yeah, I used to be the same way. Belgian Quad is only style I really like as much as IPAs/DIPAs. A good Saison is killer too though. I'm a sucker for that Belgian yeast taste.

I'm the opposite if anything. I used to really like them, and now I find the super hoppy ones really unbalanced.

Since you're from pa and you go to stanford have you been to rose and crown? The only place around here I could find Pliny. Place is pretty sweet.

Haha. We found out that the whole foods off university gets it the first Tuesday of every month. We're gonna stock up! If you're a fan you can definitely hit it up. They have a 6 bottle limit per person though.

Also. On the subject of Rose and Crown. Did you see the Sam Adams Utopias? It's 300 bucks for the bottle and it's like 25% sounds fucking insane.

I don't drink pliny unless its less than 2-3 weeks old, the hops start to die after about 3-4 weeks. Drink it as fresh as possible, says it right on the label:

One of my classmates had a bottle of this and let me have some. It was stupendous! Too bad it isn't sold here in Sweden and costs a lesser fortune to get a couple of bottles shipped here unless you'd ship together with some friends.

I have a beer here that I'm saving for the weekend which the label says is a "Belgian Black Barleywine". From Tuatara brewing, a local craft brewery for me. Never tried anything in the Barleywine style before. Really need to get a snifter glass to drink it from haha

I can find it in about 5 stores within a 1 mile radius, and that's not an exaggeration. Try walking into random liquor stores more often, you might be surprised at what they carry. Also, you're a faggot if you don't go and try pliny the younger. Post pics when you do in February.

I just had Jolly Pumpkin's pumpkin ale, it doesn't taste like pumpkin at all but it was good sour ale so I'd recommend it for that.
Delicious Pumpkin Ales:

Southern Tier - Pumpking
Michigan Brew - Screaming Pumpkin (my favorite)
Heavy Seas - Great(er) Pumpkin
Shipyard - Smashed Pumpkin (if you haven't had it, I was told it's limited)

Flying Dog - Imperial Pumpkin Ale (I didn't like it, but everyone else seems to)

There's some others that I've had this past month but I can't remember their names. Went to go pick up a new pumpkin beer last night and the liquor store had Mad Elf and Bernardus Christmas Ale, I left with no pumpkin.
