Also, no mention of I? It may not be a full-length, but it's definitely one of my fave releases by them. It has everything that makes them great - crushing slow parts, fast rhythmic workouts, atmospheric interludes... And it's superb in its compositional form too. |

I completely fail to understand how anyone could not call "Destroy Erase Improve" their best album. Their absolute pinnacle, containing their most diverse, complex yet catchy songs!

some of us prefer the more atmospheric direction they took following Chaosphere.

Catch 33, Nothing, Chaosphere and DEI are my personal favorites. Also Contradictions Collapse is pretty underrated.

I used to give this band shit for being full of chug riffs, but if you take a listen to ObZen and honestly don't hear any versatility/songwriting then you should not be allowed to operate a pair of headphones without supervision.
Also, the Re-Record of Nothing happened because the 7 strings were tuned down beyond a point that they could handle. Took me a while to get into them, but this band rules. My least favorite song by Meshuggah is probably Neurotica. Sounds like pitch-shifted circus music to me for some reason. Last edited by Nun Stampede!; 01-19-2011 at 01:01 PM.. |

I don't know about that. I know that a lot of the writing was Fredrik programming EZDrummer shit, but those were demos. I'm pretty sure they all got a proper re-record from Haake. He even did the studio drums for Bleed as far as I know. It just took him forever to learn/prepare for playing live. But a decent amount of time separates those two releases so maybe he just got better in the meantime. No real answer to your question.

I don't think there is anything on Catch 33 that Haake can't play. They explained numerous times that it was just more cost effective to use Superior. Plus, every member contributed to the writing process. They all wrote beats, riffs (people forget that Jens plays guitar and actually wrote "Suffer in Truth"), vocals, lyrics, arrangements, etc. That's why I think it's their best release as a collaborative effort. It was meant to be an experiment, the antithesis to "I", basically.

I seem to remember reading that Catch 33 was programmed because all band members wanted to have input into the final drum orchestration. Something like that.
EDIT: Yeah. |

Meshuggah will never fail to amaze me for a coupla reasons:
- the amount of talent collectively held within the band ** - the way they have move in new directions after each release (I was there when fans begged for years for DEI 2.0, and they never gave in) - the obvious regard and trust they have in paving their own way within the metal genre ** just watch those YouTube live videos of Jens/Fredrik simultaneously singing and playing (guitar) the parts off Contradictions, way back in 1990!!! Interestingly, Thordendal has visibly been taking a lesser and lesser role in the songwriting of the more recent Meshuggah releases. Whilst Hagström has come to define the current "sound" of the band... Quite curious when you think about the origins of the current line-up. |

Perfect band both live and on disc.
Every release is slightly different from the previous and always great. So will the new one.... |

but they handle it even better on the re-release. this isn't debatable ;p
the whole mix in general is a bit more soothing compared to the original. not as high-mid rangey. Last edited by ChAAPY; 01-19-2011 at 07:47 PM.. |
