Black Metal in the summer?
It seems so cliche but, I have never been able to handle listening to black metal in the spring/summer. A little more than a month ago it was pretty much a daily ritual but now as it warms up again, I have no desire to hear it. This happens every year since I can remember.
Is anyone else like this? |

I listen to whatever music in whatever situation or mood. There are some preferences though, like Immortal is clearly a winter band for me. That doesn't mean I don't listen to them in summer, but upon the first snowfall to occur, you can bet that I'll be spinning Immortal and standing at the window drinking Beer.

The atmosphere of Black Metal fits like a glove for the cold and dark time of year. Misantrophy, trolls, paganism, dead forests, cold production, minimalism, furry-animal boots, black/white paint, frostbitteness etc... paints pale and cold pictures. I can spin Death Metal year around... Especially the brutal, bass heavy (warm) kind. Its like summer music with barbecue and beer in the parque. ;-) |

wtf? Music isn't like Christmas decorations I pull out at certain times of the year. I listen to whatever whenever I'm in the mood.

I would listen if I was in the mood. But, I'm just never in the mood for black metal when the sun is shining... Grind and death metal, Sludge/stoner rock, Hip hop or electro stuff... It seems the only black metal I can handle this time of year is newer rock/punk styles of Darkthrone, or old school shit like Venom, Celtic Frost (in the same vein but not really bm)
Shit like Leviathan just kills my modd this time of year. |

I understand listening to black metal during the Autumn/Winter seasons because the cold atmosphere of the music fits the setting, but I listen to any black metal when the mood hits me no matter what the temperature is outside. I am, however, more likely to listen to Transilvanian Hunger when it's snowing outside than I would Here In After.

This past Winter, I listened to Black Metal more than anything else and it felt perfect. I still listen to it a lot now, but the incongruous atmosphere always bothers me, even though I know it shouldn't. Driving through a blizzard at night while listening to Velvet Cacoon just doesn't compare to doing the same on a bright sunny day for me. I'm really neurotic with music.

I normally only listen to music at home anyway so the weather doesn't really have any bearing on what i listen to but i don't see how the summer would make black metal any less enjoyable.

I sometimes experience this. Yeah, I'll listen to black metal any time of the year, but I'm less interested in the chilly-sounding stuff when it's warm. I tend to be into early Darkthrone, Bathory, and Sarcofago most in fall/close to Halloween and Immortal in the dead of winter.
I've also discovered that since I've been spending more time in an urban area for shcool I've been less interested in rustic/nature themed music like a lot of black metal and folk, but more interested in hearing stuff that evokes a dark urban night - hip-hop/trip-hop, smoky jazz, dubstep, industrial & noise, breakcore, post-punk & noise rock, and shit like that. I still listen to metal though. |

...I didn't take into consideration that some of you never experience cold winters so I guess that would change the perspective quite a bit. Seriously, I don't know how some you guys do it... I love black metal but, when the sun is shining, I'm in flip flops and craving bbqs and beers in the park, the last thing I think about is the new Beherit album (as good as it is;just onw example)
Some of you know what's up. Good to know I'm not toally crazy ...i'll make a whopping generalization and assume you are from cold climates. |

I'm like this with most moody/dark music in general. It's hard to get in the mood to listen to it when the birds are outside singing, it's 85 degrees, and the sun is shining. Guess I'm not grym enuff.
That being said, I can usually still listen to these kinds of music when it's late at night, regardless on season (still depending on what kind of mood I'm in though). |

I totally understand were your coming from. Its not like I CANT listen to Death Metal in the winter, or Black Metal in the summer. Its just I seem to listen to those genres more in certain seasons. Nothing is better then playing some Transylvanian Hunger on a Snowy day, just as nothing is better then playing Trading Pieces on a Summer Day. Sounds cliche, sounds stupid, it might just be that those CDs hold more value to me and mean more to me during certain seasons. Maybe I can relate to previous occurrences while listening to the CDs at the times, but thats just that way it is for me.
But oddly enough I have been listening to a lot of Darkthrone recently, after seeing Until the Light Takes us, really felt like I needed to revisit them, and im loving it. |

I watched this recently (I've been on a Darkthrone kick ever since the beginning of Winter) and I've been meaning to post this for some reason. It's kinda related to the topic.

Of course I'll listen to anything anytime I feel like it, but I do think that if it's super bright out, listening to a band like darkthrone just doesn't seem as appealing. Likening that to christmas decorations is unfair; it's more like how you wouldn't want to watch a horror movie in a bright room.
