I don't meet many people that dislike Gran Torino too, but I'm always happy when I do. So overrated.

I still think Harry Brown was terrible, though.

I thought this was awesome. I haven't read the book but as a movie the premise worked perfectly. There was a great deal of depth and subtlety in the tense relationships of the family, and the exposition was timed perfectly.

A few of the shots reminded me of Kubrick in a way. I loved the theme of the colour red throughout.

i saw both kill bills this weekend for the millionth time this weekend. i wikipedia'd them though and checked out some of the films that influenced the movie. i checked out "the one they call one eye" on youtube and so far it's pretty sick.

So... which one is the better cut? Redux is the only one I've seen, so I don't know which scenes were missing in the original version. I'm guessing at least the whole French plantation episode was added here, felt completely unnecessary. Really powerful movie though, don't understand how I've managed to not see it earlier.

The original cut for me. It's one of the closest examples to a perfectly edited film that I can think of, and the additional scenes in the Redux just totally throw off the pacing. If the Redux were the cut that was released '79, that movie would have tanked and been an even bigger disaster than it already was. I'm not saying the Redux is bad, it was cool to see those scenes, but they just didn't feel necessary to me...I didn't feel like I had watched a better or improved movie.

I remember a professor telling me there's a work print of the movie floating around that's something like 5 or 6 hours long with all sorts of crazy shit--like Sheen killing Kilgore at the beach.
