^If you like this kind of movie you might like "Lawrence of Arabia". It's even more epic in scale (a lot more actually) and about as long.
![]() a.k.a. "Match Factory Girl" What a piece of shit. A reviewer on IMDB said this film would embody Finnish Culture. If that's true the Finns must be completely retarded. The only good thing are the actors, which are great. Apart from that it's 70 minutes of wasted time. The whole movie is just ugly, ugly people with ugly clothes driving ugly cars and living in ugly homes. The supposedly "rich" guy doesn't even have fitting clothes, or a haircut that deserved that name. The supposedly "tragic" main character is a stupid and ugly girl who can't open her mouth. I have the feeling that many of the reviewers just assumed it must be an artsy and important movie because it's so ugly. In fact, it's so ugly that even the technical aspects are horrible. The camera frames seem extremely amateurish (despite some good ideas), the FOV of the cam seems way to small. Is this done on purpose? Ugly just for the sake of it? The film tries to sell a story about society, with stupid and obvious metaphors and symbolisms, when it should be clear that the fate of the poor family in the centre of focus is absolutely well deserved, as they are a bunch of idiots. BTW. there are about 5 conversations in the whole movie.... 0/10 Last edited by Naitz; 07-05-2011 at 11:14 PM.. |

I have only seen "The Man Without A Past" by Kaurismäki and I really liked that one. I'm having quite a hard time believing this movie is as bad as you're making it out to be. Also not sure how some of your criticism is valid... It's alright you're not enjoying a minimalistic and bleak approach, but that surely is far from a default weakpoint of a movie (and art in general, for that matter).

Well, maybe I just don't understand the Finnish style. But it was neither funny (I laughed sometimes, but I'm pretty sure those things weren't intended as humorous), nor does it have a message, nor does the actual script offer something remotely new or interesting.
The only thing I could imagine one would enjoy is the actual style itself, if one likes to indulge himself in the pointless misery of lower working-class (non)-culture. |

I wouldn't think Kaurismäki is the embodiment of some Finnish style of directing you seem to be talking about.

I really enjoyed this. Nice level of complexity with the plot twists and character depth. It starts out archetypal and then just thickens and develops into something really unpredictable. There were at least 2 key scenes that really took me by surprise. Not usually a huge fan of Russell Crowe, but he was pretty tolerable here. Guy Pearce was good too, and of course Kevin Spacey was cool. |

Starts out conventional and rather boring, but adds its own little spin to the "ghost story" + "haunted house"-movie. Also has a convincing, multi-layered plot, good acting and some emotional impact. Recommended.

Love how it can be interpreted as psychological, supernatural or a combination of both. Though the ultimate ending was executed in too cheesy a way IMO, even though the concept of the ending was fine. |

Yeah, I had a feeling there were a lot of little details left to uncover when watching it again.

I'd generally be with you on this one, but in this case it didn't bother me at all, since the movie had up to this point been really sparse on getting emotional or melodramatic. This way it really felt like the intended payoff to me, albeit of course a bittersweet one. Last edited by Lichtbringer; 07-08-2011 at 01:50 AM.. |

![]() Reasonably entertaining period flick, centered in Spain at the time of the French Revolution. Nothing spectacular, and a tad cheesy in parts, but Javier Bardem puts in a good shift. Also, casting Randy Quaid as an 18th century King of Spain made me lol, so couple of bonus points there. ![]() Cool film about a satanic book. Story is reasonably good but Depp is a bit of a pussy in this role. Still worth a watch, but neither of these films will blow your mind. |

Despite critics hating "The Ninth Gate", I always enjoy that film - I watch it whenever it's on - for some strange reason. It's also devoid of likeable characters, which I think is pretty cool.
Also just watched this - yes, I'm just hanging around all day/night watching movies - 'cause I felt in the mood for a mindless revenge thriller starring Mel Gibson. The movie didn't even quite deliver on that. Standard material, maybe a bit on the violent side. As you would expect from reading the cast, the best role belongs to Ray Winstone. So yeah, shit movie. ![]() Last edited by Lichtbringer; 07-08-2011 at 04:03 AM.. |

![]() Okay movie I guess, but the fat Native American dude was a pretty bad actor. Oh, but the music is awesome - sounds like it could've been done by Earth. Edit - I looked it up, and the soundtrack is by Neil Young ![]() mehhhh ![]() I saw this in theaters and liked it a lot... the Jew main character makes me laugh. This is probably the best one out of the three Last edited by Popegina; 07-08-2011 at 06:34 AM.. |

Did you watch this at a cinema that handles 7.1 surround sound? apparently, it's a must. I hope it's Bay's last Transformers film.

Good question. I remember noticing that the sound was lacking in some spots, so it probably wasn't in 7.1.
Regardless, I enjoyed the hell out of the movie. The scenes reminded me of Crysis 2 with the destruction to the buildings, and even the same robotic sound effects were used. I honestly don't get the criticism. |

Watched this last night: ![]() Weird as fuck. Very British, or at least very "20-30 years ago" British. Was disappointed that De Niro was only in about 3 scenes. |

![]() Really fucking good. It's one of a small handful of ancient movies that's been so interesting that I've completely forgotten that I'm watching a really old black and white film within the first 20 minutes. |

![]() this is also one of those movies. I really enjoyed it. its about the life of chopin and its actually very accurate aside from small trivial things. for instance in one scene chopin's professor remarks on how chopin practiced for 8 hours. chopin(according to his letters) never practiced for more than 3 and would get pissed if his students practiced anymore than 3. anyways nonsense aside fucking awesome movie |
