You're only saying that because you've got underdog syndrome for Appaling Spawn and wish that they were more highly regarded than Lykathea. Appaling Spawn is great, but Lykathea is on a whole other level.

No. Lykathe was a band that had a lot of good ideas, but couldn't do anything constructive with them.

Rubbish. Look at An Old Man And A Child, the last song, that song structure makes it all the more epic. Perfectly put together. I don't know what you're on about.

The slop on that CD bugs me so much. Album has some cool ideas and tunes though, just not a huge fan.

Fuck I just got into this. Some cheesy parts, but its like NSV + a middle-eastern vibe at its best.
I dig. |

It's okay. Not bad, but certainly not great either. Just merely good. Lots of cool riffing and epic Egyptian thematic elements, but it's a little bit too mishmashy to really allow those unique parts to flow as epically as they could have.
But the worst part is the production. It's abysmal, and really gets in the way of the sound as a whole. Gritty, and much too dense. |

I like it, some moments on there are simply mindblowing. Overall, it's definitely unique and a good thing for that.
But i'll echo some comments about it feeling quite slapdash sometimes. I don't mind the production, but the general sloppiness and the manic transitions don't translate properly with the sublime moods that are being evoked as well. It's similar to my reaction to Neuraxis' Truth Beyond. That album is incredible, but sometimes the songs collapse on themselves a bit. I also can't reconcile the mad guttural vocals to the vibe the music reaches for; in sound and lyrics. It really doesn't work for me. I listen to it very occasionally, and get into it when I do. But I can't honestly list it amongst my favourites of tech death. |

Very well put, I agree with all of this. The album tries to be grandoise and with those vocals and the dense production it just doesn't work. |

I'm bumping a 3 month old thread. Why? Because it's about Lykathea Aflame; And because there's no Metalocalypse shit in this thread; And because it's one of the harder albums toget into and fully appreciate. But once you do.... wow.
The production serves it well IMO. It adds to the INSANE amount of depth that is found in the songwriting, but melodically and harmonically. Last edited by Claude; 04-25-2009 at 12:30 AM.. |
