my take on Deathfest
i love grind and think Afgrund, Ingrowing, JaKa, Gadget and Keitzer killed it live...but Martyr were the best band of the fest. that performance raised expecations for death metal live performances for me. i was completely blown away.
im reading that people said Anaal were actually good. i stayed for about 2 minutes and when i realized he couldnt hit the Emperor-ish vocals live or the screams, i knew they'd suck. so are you assholes in denial or did they actually get their shit together as the show went on |

I think every review has said "they sucked and then got better" so...yeah.

how did they get better though? did they get studio techs in there to help him process his vocals since he obviously doesnt have the ability to pull it off live?

His vocals got better and it started to sound like the shrieks you hear on Codex, he also got a little better with the clean parts but in all fairness I think most of the clean lines are dual or tri-layered on cd.

also, what happened with Macabre? their sound was horrible. you could barely hear the bass except for 1 or 2 songs. the guitars were buried under the drums. and he talked for like 45 seconds between each song. biggest letdown maybe in my 4 years of going to MDF

As weird as Macabre sounded having the singalong to begin Vampire of Dusseldorf ruled
I've never heard so many people scream "I Want to see your blood run, thats the thing that makes me cum" before.

Macabre's sound got slightly better as it went on. Anaal's got a shitload better. The last 3 songs sounded very good.

My favorites were Impaled and Ghoul. The only really disappointing band that I really wanted to see was Gadget. Biggest surprises were Behold the Arctopus and Martyr both bands fucking killed. My only complaint would be that it seemed like quite a few bands were cutting their set too short.

I stayed for the one Codex Necro song they played
the 3rd time dude tried to sing, I walked out. gadget could've used some more guitar in the monitors, but I thought they did good despite that. and their singer was a trip Macabre. . .dude couldn't play the end of "vampire. . " for some reason. ?!?! who knows Fuck...I'm Dead owned the whole weekend for me though. Last edited by kmfcm; 05-28-2008 at 12:30 AM. |

i've seen Macabre as many times as some of you are old (make sense?)
half the time, their live shows are just straight up awful you're either gonna get a golden one or a dogshit one MDF 2008 they delivered the feces tried and true Anal Neckbath kinda blew, *shrugs* i could say alot of things about alot of bands... but yknow i will just say this: someone tell the sound guy to either turn the guitars up or the drums down, earplugs for some bands gave me nuttin'but a drum track (Fuck... I'm Dead especially) oh yes. and Flesh Parade turned me inside out-gotta make sure that's documented

I kinda felt like FLesh Parade was like the Birdflesh of MDF 08 in terms of solid and captivating assault of merciless grind. I mean, they may not have sweet dresses or songs about cat breath, but they do sing about bestiality and have great southern drawls.

Yes. The sound guy really should listen closer to the mix. The kick drum does not need to be 10 times louder than the other instruments. It really gets annoying after a while when you can't hear anything but the bass drum.

Anaal Nathrakh was the highlight of the weekend for me. They may not have sounded the best, but damn, were they brutal. Nuclear Assault sounded even worse, but hey, it's Nuclear Fucking Assault. It was awesome seeing them live, and when you know all the lyrics and music they don't sound quite as bad. Impaled sounded great and put on a good show. Defintely surprised me. As did Monstrosity. I thought Macabre sounded decent. I wish they would have played more. Other favs were Ingrowing, Squash Bowels, Grave, Fuck...I'm Dead, Phobia, Dead, Engorged, GSR, Gadget, and Blood Duster.

Nobody has mentioned Coffins or Behold the Arctopus in their lists. Did none of you like them? Coffins, especially, were one of my favs of the weekend.

I thought Anaal Nathrakh killed it, definatly one of my highlights. yea their first song was kinda weak but after that they picked up and the last 3 songs were absolutely awesome. Ingrowing was definatly a highlight for me as well as i hadn't heard them before and they ended up bein sick enough for me to be drawn into buyin a cd. Ghoul and Impaled were probably the best but i kinda expected that, and having not seen Ghoul before i really woulda liked a longer set. my biggest let down was macabre though, i've been into them for ages and after their last show in baltimore i really wasn't surprised they weren't enthused. i saw them at the ottobar and maybe 3 people came who weren't in the other bands playing, it was really shitty but they were awesome and even had zodiac and fish come out on stage and corporate death was just much more enthused about the stories and whatnot.
