Lyrical composition, style, and content...the beats are much different between the 2 genres...

It's kinda like comparing death metal and tech death...similar yet very different...

IMO rap is aimed squarely at showcasing the talents of the vocalist and his rhythmic abilities etc, whereas hip-hop always seemed to me to be more about more of the whole package, ie rap-style vocals but with more attention spent on the music behind them, samples/loops/ interpolations etc.

Not really, considering that most of it is completely talentless and they're not saying anything.

Again, there's no real difference. It's just which term people prefer to use. If you want to seperate them, rap is mainstream garbage, hip hop is a culture.

This makes sense. Sometimes one of my friends will show me some rap/hip hop song that I think is really cool, but for the most part I only listen to it to laugh at the lyrics.

How has no one mentioned canibus ? He`s my favorite. But I like busta rhymes, wu tang/sideprojects, Immortal Technique, Blackstar/mos/kweli, some common, older gangsta rap, dilated peoples, MF Doom, some 2pac, blackalicious, and krs-one.

Icp is not cool. I went to a hippy fest this summer (for the lsd and 4 days in the woods) and while I was tripping I just kept yelling at them and calling them I see people. But theyre from around my area which is a disgrace.

Pac was incredible and probably one of the only good things to come out of the west coast. His only downside was the beats could've been better and, since the dude recorded sooo much material, naturally he had his share of sub par stuff.

Canibus Rip The Jacker is awesome. I love the beats. The JMT dude did em right?

Also, Wakeness, ICP man? COME ON!!! How?!?! They're one of the few groups that makes me want to be physically violent.

Yeah, Stoupe produced it. Canibus is insanely talented, but he always gets the shittiest beats imaginable. That album is great though. Stoupe is the man.

Yeah dude I agree there is some boring shit in his catalogue, but some of his stuff is literally astonishing. His delivery is unmatched, soooooo dynamic, unlike anyone else.

The first Makaveli disc (came out right around the time of his death) is probably the best overall record he ever did. The production is flawless, the flow is fucking ferocious at times, and introspective and wise at others. Me Against the World is another all time classic record though.
