first post. Whats up guys?

I do like some rap/hip hop. A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, Three 6 Mafia(guilty pleasure), Project Pat, old Ice Cube, some Wu Tang Clan. However, most rap/hip hop nowadays is just too fake. Nobody has anything to say anymore.

Used to listen to lots of it. It's a shame there's only been a handful of good releases in last five to seven years, or so. I still listen to some cds every now and then, including: all of the shit wakeness mentioned, Organized Konfusion ( I recommend this to everyone who listens to rap at all ), Gravediggaz, Wu-Tang, Company flow, Cannibal Ox, Non Phixion, first Notorious B.I.G album, JMT, Mobb Deep, Gangstarr, Eric B & Rakim, Lords of the Underground and a couple of others I fail to remember right now.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned Kool Keith...the best lyricist on this planet IMO...his album Black Elvis/Lost in Space is amazing along with his Dr. Octagon and Dr. Dooom albums (Dr. Dooom is his best work to date.)

There definitely a difference between hip hop and rap. Hip Hop is all about intelligent lyrical composition, with a real sounding drum kit and less bass...

Rap/Gangster is more about gang violence, drug dealing, killing, and gore, with darker beats and tons of bass...something I can't possibly relate to but still love it....

used to like hip-hop, such as Onyx, Rahzel (never could spell his name), Beastie Boys, Wu Tang and BIG naturally, before i discovered metal and when i've looked back in hindsight aside from a very small select group of artists, virtually any single one of the death metal bands i've gotten into is far superior to the hip-hop artists/bands.

just seems to lack the pure aggression that the metal i love has so much on tap. Yes they can write angry rhythmic words and that but when the majority of all you've got underneath is seemingly really damn generic synth drums and "street beats", it detracts from it significantly IMO.

If there's anything "urban" flavoured that I actually still enjoy as much as before, it'd probably be drum n bass as while it's not as heavy - least not in the same way - as metal, it still has that adrenalising effect.
Obvious stuff like LTJ Bukem, Roni Size, Krust, Squarepusher, Grooverider... now that's street.

Even that description has its holes though. You can have dark beats and rap more about the "thug" side of things, but still do it in an intelligent way. Enter the Wu-Tang being the perfect example of that.

They still rapped about the typical aspects of growing up in the "ghetto," but they did it in a much more honest/realistic way. They still had their share of "thug" moments though:

ehh maybe on the first group record, but there's plenty of thug shit on there too and some of the the solo albums have a shitload of drugdealer songs.

True...there are exceptions but you get my drift...

Lynch is also a good example...his beats are definitely gangster and dark, his lyrics are as well but he does it in a more intelligent manor...an idiot can still tell the difference between his beats and style and WU's beats and style...

To the person who doesn't like hip hop and rap its all the same, but people like me and you who appreciate it, can definite hear a big difference...
