Red face Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

Just saw mother! And I absolutely loved it.

The problem I have with most allegorical films driven by a theological or philosophical narrative is that they are susceptible to becoming dull dry meditations. The final third of this film evokes an overwhelming chaotic horrific gut punch that is impossible to ignore and totally negates my initial preconceptions as this being just another cinematic Animal Farm. It's also pretty amazing that a film like this is getting mainstream recognition(obviously the names Aronofsky, Lawrence, Bardem, Pfeiffer, Harris etc. are automatically going to put asses in seats as well as the misleading marketing/trailer) usually a film like this is created by an obscure director with an unknown cast with immediate backlash only to be unearthed years later with delayed critical reception if it's lucky.

IT wasn't bad and Taylor Sheridan is three for three

Blade Runner: 6/10

pretentiously "smart" and "artsy", but really just overly long without much to say (if anything at all), stilted dialogue and a story that doesn't have anything of note to add to the BR universe/mythology. it looks really really good. but that's it. and the soundtrack was atrocious. as if they gave a kid the "inception button" to press every now and then. i expected much much more from Villeneuve. hopefully he doesn't become like late career Ridley Scott so early into his :(

The studio seem to be generally happy with Villeneuve and are okay with him taking on Dune. It's all talks right now, nothing confirmed but that's gonna be a trilogy of sci-fi for him - Arrival, BR 2049 and Dune.

2049 is like technical without soul(like many bands).the main focus on the story is weak.

the killing of a sacred deer.this is preety much Ok, knowing is coming from Lanthimos.directing, camera is all superb in the vein of last Kubrick movie...cast is also good matched, esp. that kid from dunkirk.certanly for me better than Lobster.

good time.i despise r.pattinson, but in this one he is watchable.it starts good, but later is badly constructed.too many aspects of stories into one movie with cliche s.the movies has really good soundtrack.

wind river.great movie!...that winter crime stories in the vein of fargo, a simple plan.one of the best of the year for sure.too bad movie has a litlle timing of J.bernthal-what a good actor.sheridan is a great writer.

hyped for seeing nelyubov from zvyagintsev.

In BR what was the point of that Sega Virtuabitch? Just to show YET AGAIN that Ryan Gosling throws that weirdo dissociative dick? Or are ya'll millennials really about that VRussy and that was meant to touch a chord?

I gotta say visually the movie fucked me up pretty bad. But other than the ham-handed Deckard tie-in I didn't see a reason for it to be a "Blade Runner" movie.

Aren't you a bit harsh? Only OK? Anyway, probably seeing it this week, cant wait.

Loveless didn't disappoint, tho I wasn't feeling as engaged in and attached to it like to some of his previous work.

Just finished with On Body and Soul, dreamy ethereal and melancholic tone to it, another critic favorite this year when it comes to foreign scene, good stuff. Columbus is next.

Great flick. Made me watch Bone Tomahawk. Both are fantastically violent. Apparently the director of both films was in a black metal band.

Been meaning to watch that for a while, thanks for reminding me. It was decent, but not as good as "Brawl...", imo.

You know, "Bone Tomahawk" terrified me so much I had to turn it off towards the end. That whole buildup and the film's atmosphere made it deeply unsettling for me, I can't even really explain. Really a testament to how skillfully made it is though, I guess. Had I known "Brawl..." is by the very same guy beforehand, I would've probably not watched it, haha. Both great movies for sure though.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

Blade Runner 2049 - Lifeless, boring, disappointing.
Wind River - Mostly decent, sometimes corny, nothing special really.
Baby Driver - Deeply retarded movie. Good reviews why?
Three Billboards - Pretty fucking epic.
Unforgiven - A tad overrated, I guess, but very good.

Wish I could avoid watching all this hollywood drivel but I really don't have the means or smarts to come by all the indie films I'd like to see...

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

Han Solo - Star Wars fatigue def settling in cos this was a decent film overall with some cool visuals but it's missing something. For me Han didn't feel a lot like Han but it's probably one of those things or trials he goes through early in his life that makes him the kind of guy he is in episodes IV and so on.

Annihilation - this I watched twice in the theater, really dug it and the third make-or-break act was visually weird and cool.

Creepy 2 and The Ritual on Netflix are more than decent. I liked Creepy 2 a lot cos I was expecting the sequel to kind of hit the same nail it did and therefore be boring but it sort of sways from that and builds on the first one. Self aware and yet pushing it a bit ... bigger jumpscares than the first one haha!

Horror scares the shit out of me ... and I just love it. Hereditary comes out this week and I gotta check it out.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

I assume you are talking about "Creep", but ye, both parts are very enjoyable, so was The Ritual.

-----------------------------------------------

Nothing of late has been worth screaming about, but I liked "November" a lot:

November (2017) - Bizarre and batshit crazy Estonian dark comedy in b/w and quite possible the most visually striking movie I have seen in years, it heavily draws influences from Tarkovsky and Lynch, but still manages not being too derivative. I would heavily recommend it, but I am sure it will divide the crowd. And I forgot, its bleak, very bleak. My favorite flick of last year, 9/10.

Shit - it's not listed on IMDB but on the film Oleg is listed.

Also Zahler the director used to write for Metal Maniacs and worked in Paragon Records

But what is Oleg credited for?

Zahler also plays in Realmbuilder, as Flaccid pointed out. Pretty cool band, imo.

EDIT: Actually, I take that back. They’re fucking awesome. It’s like medieval working class minimalist heavy metal. lol!
