I think he just means that Kenose has very clear production in contrast to the muddier sounds of Si Monvmentvm..., but I'd say everything after that album has clearer production, it's just that Fas has extremely chaotic and complicated riffs that make it about as hard to decipher as Si Monvmentvm. But pretty much everything they released in 2005 (Kenose, plus the two 20-min tracks) are an excellent place to start for someone. They have the classic black metal mixed with the experimental elements and the production does a great job of emphasizing all the different sections and transitions.

On a side note, does anyone notice that DSO albums sound like they have the production of an electronic album? I wonder if it has anything to do with Mikko's background in Power Electronics, but on all their albums from 2004 onward, everything sounds carefully layered and sampled. Even on Si Monvmentvm where they still retain a classic black metal sound, the "rawness" sounds like it was sampled from a raw source material and then mixed professionally.

Holy shit, I've always thought the same thing but never mentioned it because I wasn't quite sure how to describe it.

I don't know, maybe you are right. All i know is that Chaining has the best production of any extreme music, imo. Kick drum sound is fucking HUGE.

Words cannot describe how fucking scythe I am regarding the new DsO. Chaining the Katechon has been spinning a lot since news about the new album came out. Forget vriend and all his faggotry, this new album deserves at least 30 pages.

I prefer Blut aus Nord's brand of mystical unique French BM personally, but DsO fookin' rips too. Kenose is a masterpiece to me. The two after are a little harder to swallow but i'm interested to hear what's next.

I have to agree, although I got into DsO first and fell in love with them until BAN came along. Nothing can top BAN's experimental albums as far as black metal goes for me. With that said, I really can't wait for this album. With this, the new Ontogeny, and the new Anomalous coming up at the end of the year, I think 2010 is going to end well. Very, very well.

Which album(s)? Because I only have Dialogue with the Stars, and I'm not into it.

That cover art looks AMAZING. Definitely like it better than any of their other covers.

BaN's back catalogue features really quite heterogeneous albums. With the possible exception of Mystical Beast of Rebellion to TWWTG, all BaN's albums evolve and forward new and different sounds, while retaining their own distinct atmosphere.
Dialogue with the Stars is a lot like a smooth blend of all their styles so far, I imagine listening to different eras of their back catalogue will be like viewing the different pieces of the latest BaN puzzle. The first two simply have to be heard though, they are more traditional sounding second wave but still forward austere and precocious melodies.

Sorry.

There's only one album and two EP-length songs after Kenose. I guess only Chaining the Katechon got an official EP release while the two other epic tracks from before and after Kenose were only featured on comps.
