yeah dude i recently caught on to the tempo of the high hat and it gives the song such a bizarre swing! easily one of my fav tracks. solo is so sick.

After listening to this album non stop for the past 3 days I can't say this is their best work to date. I don't really think they'll ever top Catch 33. That was them at their experimental peak and they created a true masterpiece. Something you can continually dig into and find new little intricacies with every listen. I also think "I" has some of their most brilliant moments and overall takes you on a trippy 20 minute journey, although there are moments in that song that I think are pretty silly and sometimes i'll feel the need to fast forward through them.

Some of these new songs have awkward structures and feel like they could use something more. Demiurge for example, which happens to have one of my favorite sections on the whole album, feels like it jumps into the fade out riff way too soon. theres something awkward about the structure in that song. Swarm is full of cool sections, but as a whole is somewhat tedious to listen to for me. I can't say I like the first 2 minutes of Hurt that Finds you, yet the last 3 minutes is one of the highlights of the album. Its frustrating.

With that said, Marrow is one of my fav mesh tracks ever written. Really sounds like chaosphere with 8 strings to me. I am Colossus, Demons name and Behind the Sun are all amazing as well. And I still love DNLD! That track grooves like a fucking bitch! such a fun song with great momentum throughout.

That's kind of why I didn't include "Catch33". It's intended to be one piece of music that represents the antithesis to "I". Seems like it would be more fair to compare "Koloss" to their actual full-lengths.

I'm glad it doesn't have an overtly strong narrative between tracks because they've already done that to death. It's not my favorite, but I think it's definitely their best as a band. Sounds like they are where they want to be as a group and are enjoying the moment together, focused on creating good music. It's simple and effective. My only complaint thus far is the majority of the songs maintain the same pulse a bit too long, but there are some nice surprises. "I Am Colossus" is a good example of that. The lyrical themes seem cliche, but I haven't read them so I'll reserve judgment. But it's cool to hear Haake laying down basic polyrhythms like 2 against 3 and 3 against 4 effectively on tracks like "I Am Colossus", "The Demon's Name is Surveillance", and "Swarm" by laying back a bit behind the kit and letting the groove of them really sink in. And of course "Marrow" is syncopated madness. Jens sounds great and I appreciate the straight-forward approach to a lot of the songs. I want to see that making of DVD now.

very true. I just love that album to death. prob my fav metal album of all time. Nothing remains my favorite full length. I think part of the reason for that is the diversity in fredriks lead work on that album. every single solo is unique.

The Demon's Name is Surveillance, Swarm and Demiurge are my favorites so far. I'd go so far as to say Demiurge is up there with my favorite Meshuggah tracks for the moment.

Only 5 songs in, seems a bit too tame to me. Really don't like "The Hurt That Finds You First" thrash beat sections.

edit: Marrow is sick.

What do y'all think about the bass tone on Koloss?

I don't have the greatest set of speakers, but the subsonic rumble on the first track and Break This Bones is almost too much. On previous releases, the bass tone was more contained, even though it had that metallic bulldozer quality to it.

Maybe if I had a better setup I'd be digging the bass more. It just makes my speakers fart a bit too much.

Don't want to be a negative nancy, but Demon's Name must be their weakest track in a long time if you ask me. Best tracks are Marrow, I Am Colussus, Demiurge & DNLD

I think demons name is pretty killer, def not one of the best though. kinda sounds like newer decapitated to me haha. I think Marrow is by a great degree the best track on Koloss as well as one of their sickest songs ever. My only problem with demiurge is that it feels like it needs something in between the bridge and the fade out riff, which feels like it comes in too early. A solo would have been great after the instrumental bridge section(one of the sickest moments of the album.)

edit: wow i just realized I pretty much said all that shit a few posts ago haha

Can't see the greatness of Marrow yet... Maybe it grows on me, but for now it's among my least favorite songs of the album.

Been listening to some of the older Meshuggah lately as well, and I still think that the riff at 1:05 in Stengah is their greatest :)

Yeah, I'm not feeling that one much either. Not sure what I'm missing.

Honestly the more I listen to this, the more dissatisfied I get.

Got mine today, enjoying it much more now. Interesting to see the writing credits too - a lot of co-writing, and Jens composed Behind the Sun, as mentioned above.

I'm still waiting for my copy but I had herb so I caved and downloaded. Listened quite a few times and not sure how I feel as a whole. Do Not Look Down, Hurt that.., Behind the Sun and Swarm are my early likes, with Marrow being the standout track (and one of their best ever imo.) I think i'm going to grow to like it more. It's weird, my main criticisms are also the record's biggest strengths. Gonna be a long time before I know where this record belongs in the disco.

While I would probably agree that this is one of Meshuggah's 'weaker' albums, it doesn't change the fact that I have an extreme urge to listen to it almost constantly.

Just picked it up, on my second listen. Seems good so far, I already like it better than the first time through. It might end up on the upper half of Meshuggah albums for me. I certainly like it more than Obzen, although I'm beginning to wonder how much of that is just the lyrics. I really don't like the lyrics on a lot of Obzen.

Me too. It's the only album I've wanted to listen to for the past week.

Also, I'm surprised by how many people seem to prefer Koloss to Obzen. The more I listen, the more I like it, but obZen was monumental for me-- I like it as much as anything they've done. I guess I thought that sentiment was a bit more widespread, but apparently not.
