Seeing them tonight! Beyond stoked! My wifes friend won me tickets. Get to see my favorite band for free, doesn't get any better than that.

saw last night. best band ever. heaviest band ever. they slowed lethargic down and I had to keep my hand on my crotch the entire time because it was too much to handle. Decapitated was sick too. Baroness was wack, don't know why they were on the bill. Their singers can't harmonize half the time.

Was anybody else at the Montreal gig? One of the best shows ever fuck...

Setlist (in somewaht of an order):

Obsidian/Demiurge
Pravus
Combustion
Glints Collide
Lethargica
The Hurt
Do Not Look Down
Catch 33 (IDID/IDIL)
New Millennium Cyanide Christ
I am Colossus
Bleed
Rational Gaze
-----
Future Breed Machine (at real tempo!)
Dancers to a Discordant System

may be forgetting one...

The new songs sounded great live, particularly the Hurt, holy shit it was massive.

Saw them on Saturday in Worcester, they were incredible. The Catch 33 stuff sounded AMAZING live. An utterly awful crowd ruined my enjoyment a bit though, I saw a bunch of fights and I didn't realize Shugga had so many Bros in their fanbase (who were also all drunk, of course). People who try to start mosh pits outside of the mosh pit need to be shot.

I can't say I was overly impressed with their show in 2010 at Roskilde Festival. However, bad sound usually ruin the live experience with most artists.

Catch 33 was great, but the last two albums are a real step back in pretty much every department imo. Really plastic sounding with some awful riffs - Marrow...intro is complete garbage. There's nothing 'progressive' about them now, it's meat and potatoes BOING-core.

I'd agree with Oleg, in death was probably their best performance. Decapitated was awesome, Baroness good - but just didn't fit the bill. I wish Scion had gotten Immolation instead.

boing-core lawl

If you're drawing those parallels between Obzen and Koloss, you should really give those albums some more listens...they're radically different in production and musical content.

^ That's the thing, though, I don't find them different at all in the way they are composed and the general aesthetic of them. They are 'strictly' composed, to the point of sterility. Think back to Nothing and how psychedellic it almost sounded, and how out there both I and Catch 33 were; the last two albums feel like they've been churned out for live use - Tomas even said that in a recent interview.

And the drums; it's a crying shame that someone with his talent is reduced to sounding like a click track. The fluidity and punch of albums like Nothing has dissipated, in favour of sound replacement/trigger bawbags. They're capable of much more imo, but whilst they're surrounding themselves with people who think Re-nothing trumps the originals and the art work for ObZen is in the least bit acceptable...they'll continue treading Nuclear blast, euro metal mediocrity.

I like this 'boingcore.' As long as it's Meshuggah doing it.

The drum sound on Kolloss is the most natural sound they've had since I. He also didn't sound like a click track on Obzen or Koloss.

Also I'm sure you know about what is "acceptable" for the band that you've been in for 20 years, glad we have your expertise on these matters

Your point is? Since I, they've released Catch 33 (programmed, so goes without saying) and ObZen, which was sound replaced all the way. So yeah, that gave me a chuckle.

Re-Nothing is how they originally intended it to sound. The guitars on the original do not sound good. They even sound out of tune at times. I'll admit I dig the drum and vocal mix on the original though. The re-nothing guitars sound absolutely MASSIVE. The artwork for obzen is indeed pretty silly. Meshuggah have never really had good album covers though.

I'm the only person in the world that thinks Obzen's cover is perfect for the music. Currently a hypothesis but working towards it being a theory.

Will definintely be seeing them the next time they are around. Their performence was flawless. Decapitated was great and Baroness, while bieng an akward band to put between these two, was still pretty solid.

Every song was incredible live with my highlights being IDIL/IDID, Pravus, Lethargica, New Millenium and Future Breed Machine. Also picked up that white and blue shirt they had. FUCK YEAH MESHUGGAH

I've never thought much of the fan entitlement mentality, but the lack of German club dates does seem like a bit of a slap in the face. I hope they'll make up for it later on.

I think that's where they started to lose me. Up until then, pretty much everything was gold and I loved the direction they were taking with I and Catch 33. In terms of the Re-nothing drums not being as good, I'd go further and say they are an absolute joke compared to the organic sound of the original. The guitars sound thicker, true, but I don't like how saturated and bland the tone is.

Oh well, I'll just have to wait until Sol Niger II...
