Graduation
Anyone here graduate (college/university) today? Or next weekend?
I did this morning. After 5 years, a couple major changes, and 34 thousand dollars, I am finished with college. Now time to get in the real world and shackle myself to industry! Excited! |

Congratulations dude!
Graduating from this BMSc shit in June sometime. What a pisstake, 1 year of hustling in the lab, cramming, and regurgitating knowledge without thinking – there is no pride in this. |

Hahah yeah I'm all for dope education...when you're actually learning something you can apply later. This year was pretty brainless on that front, other than making some friends and contacts at the lab and seeing this side of life sciences. The way stuff was taught was so patronising, it was literally like spoon-feeding – and they expected regurgitation in return, which makes it even more tragic. I spent one morning memorising the text from a set of lectures, went in that afternoon and spewed all that stuff word for word onto paper – this is considered a success.
Med, on the other hand, that is real learning. You can't even pass that shit unless you apply yourself. Which is a bitch, but that's what an education is or should be. I can't wait to get back to it. Every day feels like actual job training, if that makes sense. Life sciences feels excessively like jumping through hoops that don't have much meaning. This entire year/BMSc degree counts for 1 point on my specialty applications (2 points if I get a 1st, which is unlikely). That is pretty much the only reason I did it (other than to throw myself in the deep end in terms of working in the lab on brutally difficult shit), and the only reason I would recommend people to do it – which is kinda sad from an education point of view. I hate when people in general cheat, but especially ones that are in a health science major, when you're more than likely going to be put in a situation to save someones life. You're wasting your freakin' money by cheating. Fall 2011 semester I was getting so pissed because there were people in this upper level div. biology class I was taking and they constantly cheated off every lab practical, the exams, and finished the class with a grade that will look AWESOME on their transcript? Me? I work my ass off and don't get the same ... they could end up killing someone if they don't know their shit. /ramble. |

Going to an alumini-meeting on Friday. 3 years since I graduated.
Hopefully the event is not too akward. You often realize why no one kept in contact :P . |

Thanks for the kind words guys. The whole ceremony was a little formal, but fun all the same. Had a great party last night, cleaned and moved out of the apartment, and am now sitting at my parent's house about to go to dinner.
And I got lucky on the job front. A friend clued me in to a tech. writing job about 30 minutes away from my house and I start in 2 weeks. Life's pretty good. Good luck to those still in school. Especially you discomb. My degree is neat but ultimately frivolous. Studying medicine is a much nobler pursuit haha. |

Decided to stay around for another year and a half or so for my masters in computer engineering along with adding the extra classes for a physics double major.

And I wouldn't exactly call med 'noble' haha. When you think about it it's a fairly egotistical pursuit, unless you go hard into teaching and/or research. People who don't do any of that stuff (and there are a fair few), are ultimately leaving nothing behind when they die. They're soldiers of healthcare delivery. Sure, they (should) improve the subjective experiences of those they treat, but I think a 'noble' profession is something where you try to change the world for the better in a tangible way. Like I wouldn't particularly say people mindlessly handing out food packets in Africa are that noble, the people who are sitting down and trying to sort out the bigger problems at hand that cause those issues are more noble IMO. Needless to say, I will be trying my very best to get into research and teaching. Also, no idea why I'm rambling so much ![]() |
