Just started getting into hip hop, got a bunch of CD's. So far:
36 Chambers (awesome) Fear of a Black Planet (awesome) Paid in Full (grew on me a lot) Liquid Swords (owns) The Low End Theory (good but a little laid back for what I'm in the mood for right now) I also got Ice-T "O.G. Original Gangster" but I haven't listened to it yet. Previously I had gotten into Aesop Rock (Labor Days) but now that seems a little less appealing. |

Lot of old-school influenced shit is coming out nowadays with awesome throwback sample-heavy production, check that shit out Tomes, you might like it.
Also, just in general. Project Pat bra, motherfucking PROJECT PATTA. ![]() Last edited by Szadou; 02-25-2012 at 04:56 AM.. |

Redman - Whut? Thee Album Nas - Illmatic (must have!) Boogiedown Promotions - all of their early shit, including KRS-One's first solo album or two Eric B and Rakim - Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em; Don't Sweat the Technique Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx GZA - Words from the Genius (pre-Wu Tang solo album; kinda raw, but good) Onyx - Bacdafucup; All We Got Is Us Inspectah Deck - Uncontrolled Substance Ghostface Killah - Ironman; Supreme Clientele Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane; It's a Big Daddy Thing If you have any interest in West Coast stuff, which tends to be more beat driven and less complex lyrically, I'd recommend checking out Dr. Dre's first, Snoop Dogg's first, Ice Cube's first four, D.O.C.'s first, and all of the old NWA shit. |

Black Moon: Enta da Stage [very overlooked, but raw and gritty - probably what you're looking for if you want some of that jazzy Tribe feel, but more aggressive] Organized Konfusion: Stress: The Extinction Agenda [also mad overlooked; Pharoahe Monch owns just about everybody] Mobb Deep: The Infamous; Hell on Earth [must-have for Wu-Tang and Nas fans] Leaders of the New School (Busta's old group): T.I.M.E. [Future Without a Past is their "classic" album, but this one has more of that darker 90s sound and everyone's flow is better] Busta Rhymes - The Coming Method Man - Tical Ol' Dirty Bastard Redman: Dare iz a Darkside [darker and weirder than his first album, borders on ODB style craziness] also, not all West Coast stuff is as less complex as the big name gangsta rap stuff. For dexterous rappers check out The Pharcyde [Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde is their classic] and anything associated with Freestyle Fellowship [Inncercity Griots] including solo stuff by Aceyalone [first two albums are great]. |

FWIW, I recommended the first Redman album because I feel like his sense of humor is something that you need to be gently introduced to, and the first album is kind of a gentle bridge over the waters of oddity that flows throughout his discography. Can't believe I forgot Tical, though! |

Fucking right..!! +1 Bangarang!
I had no clue who Doomtree was....I went to a show the in the first few days I moved to Houston not knowing anything 'bout em. Didn't even know that P.O.S. was a part of them.. One of the the best live Hip-Hop performances I have ever seen. If you have a chance to catch them ..it's crucial.. life affirming |
