On the topic of guitar tone, I've always really liked it. With dampened gain there is a certain amount of "breathing room" that is achieved. Picking and muting dynamic are clearer and more pronounced which adds alot to both the riffs in the most basic way and to the atmosphere of the album. Moreover, with the fantastic bass tone/playing on Incurso, the guitar tone allows for a wonderful delineation between the instruments that goes deeper than annoying groaning pseudo-jazz fretless bass slides *cough*obscura*cough*.
