Not saying they're not authentic, it's just a very nice sound for a live recording.
The metal vox are heavy, but sound like a fair few other vocalists...and have a solid amount of reverb or some bullshit.
But yeah, his cleans are tasty - his actual tone is nice as, i've always thought that.
But I don't really rate him heaps, but he is impressive in that his cleans AND his metal vox are both solid.
Who do you think has similar growls to Akerfeldt? The one thing I've always loved about his growls is that he has this throaty menacing raspy thing going on that I've never really heard in anyone else... Definitely interested in checking out anyone you can recommend!

Yeah, I love Akerfeldt's vocals to bits. And I can't believe how good that live version of "Bleak" is. Simply godly.

But there are a few guys that do have a similar growl (perhaps not as good, but a lot of similarities in rasp, immensity and clarity). Like the lows of the Scar Symmetry guy. And some of Dan Swano's stuff too.

I fucking HATE how they change the part at around 4 minutes into the actual song when they play it live. Live they do this like half time crash over top of the downbeat snare and double bass which completely takes away ALL of the intensity of that riff, on the album it's just furious highhat playing 8ths the whole time.

haven't seen it live myself, didn't notice it in the vid until you pointed it out. i guess it's not as cool, though i'm not as upset as you seem to be . the riff itself is still really intense, the picking is just brutal.

Well, based on the vocal sound on that live vid - old Gorefest vocals are quite similar. Not quite as deep, but quite similar tone and probably more unique. Check out the album Mindloss, or False (awesome albums btw).
Also, reminds me a bit of early Amorphis vox too - check out the album The Karelian Isthmus.
There's a couple others too, I'm trying to think...

actually, sotiris from septic flesh reminds me of mike a bit, though he lacks that kind of raspy quality mike's vocals take on at times.

I have False and The Karelian Isthmus and I can see similarities but that's all there is, similarities. Mikael has a death growl that I can pick out of lineup.

Only reason it bugs me so much is because that's easily my favourite section of the entire album, haha... It's SOOO fucking EVIL!

Dan Swano has similar vocals in some ways......mikael is one of a kind though. Knowone besides him can sound so great growling and than switch to clean vocals and make you feel like your floating through outerspace.

I just saw opeth a couple nights ago.....great show. mikael is a funny guy.

Opeth is easily one of my top 5 favourite bands ever.
I just need to find an album that clicks. I can appreciate what they do though.
