The Experimental Thread
This is for Mayhemafterdeath, Griever, Metalmassacre, Schwenger and others who frequently bring to the table bands that are hard to pin down as one definite style or play with boundaries. In line with Durch's jazz thread, maybe I can try to put one up a week - Hopefully this gets enough of a following with you guys.
I will get the ball rolling with Capillary Action http://capillaryaction.bandcamp.com/ this bandcamp has their new album streaming in entirety.

Shit man I totally started listening to his earlier today. Darin from National Sunday Law posted it on his page this afternoon. Great stuff. I love how most of these songs incorporate a Latin beat so well.

So Embarrassing is also really worth checking out, that was going to be the album I intended to link but I just got news of the new release literally as I was writing the first post for this thread.
And Griever, those 2 Time of Orchids full lengths are a revelation, had NO IDEA they could be that aggressive and intense.

Oh yeah man I was bummed that you didn't have them until I gave them to you guys. I actually prefer them to Sarcast and Namesake. Don't get me wrong those are both incredible albums (I still listen to Darling Abandon on the regular) but the first two are a whole different breed. I love it.

Cool thread idea. I haven't had the time to post much lately, but I'll definitely try to contribute as much as I can. I also haven't really been listening to music lately, but that might actually add to my contributions.
Soft Machine - Volume 2 ![]() stop Soft Machine - Third ![]() drop. I've mentioned these guys in the past, don't know if I ever uploaded anything though. They're one of those bands that changed their sound (and line up) a lot throughout the years; so the consistency varies, but these two albums are superb representations of what they got themselves into. Volume II is a mixture of psychedelic rock and various elements of jazz. Third is largely instrumental and I can't even describe what it is musically (hence, its inclusion in this thread). If I'd have to give it a label, I'd say fusion. I never got into the first track on Third, so everything I have to say about it is regarding tracks 2-4. So far, I haven't found any bands that sound remotely anything like Soft Machine, especially on these two albums. For anyone familiar with late 60's/early 70's prog rock, these guys are integral in creating the Canterbury sound. Also, there is no guitar work -- minus one song on Volume II -- and this is a key element to their sound. Where there is a lack of guitar, the other instruments explore beyond their territories. The instrumental formula is drums, bass (through fuzz box), keys and a 4 (?) piece winds section. Vocals might turn some people off cause they're somewhat high-pitched. If so, you can stick to the 40 minutes that is made up of tracks 2 and 4 on Third. btw, can you guys upload those two Time of Orchids album you were talking about? I've listened to a few of their songs and didn't really get into it; but many of those into experimental music praise them, so I want to give them a real chance.

This is great. I get a really late 60s psychedelic vibe too.

That's odd. I just checked my account and the files were all there. Try this: http://rapidshare.com/files/45419329...of_Orchids.zip
Edit: Looks like your post only pasted the truncated version of that link.

I really hate coming to this thread because every time I start listening to something, I scroll down and see something else I must hear immediately.

Graviton's premier album Massless is streaming right now on MS, fellas. Posted about these guys before but they undeservedly didn't receive any attention. This album is fucking awesome. Features Sacha Dunable from Intronaut and the National Sunday Law boys.

I've been stoked on the Irons/Pulling Teeth split, Grey Savior, for a while, and it didn't disappoint.
http://www.mediafire.com/?dkcc4g9jm6u601l The Irons side is more what I think you guys are going for with this thread, but Pulling Teeth's song is great as well, and kind of different for them. Irons is a Jacob Bannon, Dwid Hellion, and Stephen Kasner industrial/ambient collaboration...pretty great stuff. Since Renny from Starkweather did vocals on that PT song, I haven't seen them posted, and they're pretty out there. |

Not sure how well this one will be received by this crowd, but I'll drop it here anyway.
http://danielbjarnason.bandcamp.com/ Focus and you will hear something truly powerful.
