What, if anything, is as good as that Dodecahedron cd right now? Just started listening to it. Shit is fucking AWESOME.

I'm not big on BM but this Dodecahedron is pretty damn good.

the only other black metal album i've listened to that's come out in 2012 is the new drudkh

Yeah, I was just using your post as a reference point to high quality black metal. Although it might not be Dodecahedron, they're still good musical efforts by my interpretations.

hopefully a new cobalt album comes out soon. havent stopped listening to gin since it came out.

Im sorry for your loss. Dodecahedron, Altar of Plagues and Inquisition are about the only black metal i listen to nowadays. So feel free to recommend anything even relatively worth checking out. I need more blackness in my life

even though it's not "real" black metal, Castevet's Mound of Ash album is incredible. It's Andrew from Biolich on guitar and the melodies are amazing.

I can somewhat relate to the last part of this, I love the album and have smashed through it a countless number of times more often than not on repeat. But I do get a fleeting sense that something is missing.
It's not a particularly crushing album, nor is very aggressive and if you think abut other bands that play in the same or similar style to them they all have those two characteristic, which are often a main driving point in their music. I think it's Dodecahedrons lack of these characteristics that gives me the sense that something is missing. Also i don't think it's a Black metal album, there's black metal elements in the music but not strong enough to be Black metal.

Phil's mentioned in interviews that they're working on a new one for "later this year." Sadly, I get the feeling it won't be any time soon since he's still active in the military.

From what i've listened, most of these "experimental" black metal albums seem to lack the whole destructive, rebellious violence and mystery of black metal in general. Its only right that some people tried to take all sorts of bm influences and actually focus on musicianship and technicality like never before, to create original music, but at the moment it doesn't do much for me.

i enjoyed that dodecahedron but it really just makes me want to listen to DsO....
