Its only the beginning of the year so there is not much to recommend IMO:

Dodecahedron s/t (yea doh)
Abyssal - Denouement (http://abyssal-home.bandcamp.com/album/denouement)

Though I am sure I forgot something.

for fuck's sake...

DrippingInsanity 02-26-2012 03:30 PM

Listen to Dodecahedron yet, Curts?

cry0fth3carr0ts 02-26-2012 03:32 PM

i'm downloading that shit RIGHT NOW

ChAAPY 02-26-2012 03:40 PM

What, if anything, is as good as that Dodecahedron cd right now? Just started listening to it. Shit is fucking AWESOME.

modern death 02-26-2012 03:48 PM

Nothing. It has reignited the fire in me.

GrindYourMind 02-26-2012 03:49 PM

I'm not big on BM but this Dodecahedron is pretty damn good.

cry0fth3carr0ts 02-26-2012 03:54 PM

the only other black metal album i've listened to that's come out in 2012 is the new drudkh

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WnLa9oJ7JK...1600/cover.jpg

Sear Bliss - Eternal Recurrence

Wilds Forlorn - We, The Damned

ChAAPY 02-26-2012 04:08 PM

unfortunately for me, those don't even come close.

the Dodecahedron album closer - around 7 minutes... shiii.

Shemhamforash 02-26-2012 04:10 PM

Yeah, I was just using your post as a reference point to high quality black metal. Although it might not be Dodecahedron, they're still good musical efforts by my interpretations.

blooddrunk 02-26-2012 04:22 PM

hopefully a new cobalt album comes out soon. havent stopped listening to gin since it came out.

also thanks for rebooting the black metal thread last one was doo doo

J72826 02-26-2012 04:32 PM

Eh, checked Dodecahedron about 5 times and it has nice parts but eh.... Misses something to me.

that isn't saying much at all LOL

gave it one spin and it didn't do anything for me. I'll listen again but meh I actually had some expectations for it.

There is a Black metal subforum for A REASON

Johnny-Skinless 02-26-2012 07:49 PM

We just like to discuss everything here. I usually find the concept of sub-forums really dull.

GrindYourMind 02-26-2012 07:58 PM

7 posts and telling us where and what to post. I like this guy, he gets to the point.

Im sorry for your loss. Dodecahedron, Altar of Plagues and Inquisition are about the only black metal i listen to nowadays. So feel free to recommend anything even relatively worth checking out. I need more blackness in my life

Schwenger 02-27-2012 01:25 AM

even though it's not "real" black metal, Castevet's Mound of Ash album is incredible. It's Andrew from Biolich on guitar and the melodies are amazing.

I can somewhat relate to the last part of this, I love the album and have smashed through it a countless number of times more often than not on repeat. But I do get a fleeting sense that something is missing.
It's not a particularly crushing album, nor is very aggressive and if you think abut other bands that play in the same or similar style to them they all have those two characteristic, which are often a main driving point in their music. I think it's Dodecahedrons lack of these characteristics that gives me the sense that something is missing. Also i don't think it's a Black metal album, there's black metal elements in the music but not strong enough to be Black metal.

Phil's mentioned in interviews that they're working on a new one for "later this year." Sadly, I get the feeling it won't be any time soon since he's still active in the military.

Johnny-Skinless 02-27-2012 02:21 PM

From what i've listened, most of these "experimental" black metal albums seem to lack the whole destructive, rebellious violence and mystery of black metal in general. Its only right that some people tried to take all sorts of bm influences and actually focus on musicianship and technicality like never before, to create original music, but at the moment it doesn't do much for me.

modern death 02-27-2012 04:46 PM

Johnny, brother, are you telling me you don't like the Dodecahedron S/T?

Same here. Nice to know apparently there's at least some talk going down for a new album.

cry0fth3carr0ts 02-27-2012 05:41 PM

i enjoyed that dodecahedron but it really just makes me want to listen to DsO....
